Do you know what time it is? It's okay, time isn't real. But it IS time for another #LainaWatchesAnne thread!
#LainaWatchesAnne If you'll remember, when last we met, Anne was on her way to the Christmas ball! Time to party!
Man, look at the dress on this random extra, though. The sleeves are beautiful and there's so much structure and detail.
#LainaWatchesAnne I actually don't think Anne or Diana's dresses really read as evening formal wear. It was totally acceptable to have cleavage in the evening.
I mean, they are young, but... meh? They look off.
They also both have VERY 80s hair in this scene, lol.
#LainaWatchesAnne They discuss Alice Bell wearing her hair up at only 17 and Diana says she looks ridiculous and she herself will wait until she's 18, which is in three years.
(Anne wears her hair up way before 18. Just saying.)
#LainaWatchesAnne Gilbert is dancing with Josie Pye who looks lovely and has HER hair up at all of 15 and no one is commenting on that.
The mini-series i not consistent with this at all.
#LainaWatchesAnne He sees Anne and makes this great face and then stares at her some more while still dancing
Diana says that if Anne hadn't been "so awful" to Gilbert, he might have asked her to dance. Anne replies that if she wanted him to, he would.
#LainaWatchesAnne This is right from the 1934 movie, not the book, and not a change I like much.
"Gilbert Blythe would stand on his head for me, if I asked him to," is not a line I would EVER see Anne saying!
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne Shirley did not realize Gilbert Blythe liked her for *years*. And not even romantically - she thought everything he did around her was to get on her nerves, basically. SHE INVENTED A RIVALRY BETWEEN THEM.
#LainaWatchesAnne So anyways, Gilbert gives Anne the cold shoulder because it's a small room and he probably heard her and Anne and Diana dance instead.
#LainaWatchesAnne He also picks up Anne's dance card that she left on the snack table and seems to keep it. Gotta say, it was a bit romantic when it was a rose that fell out of her hair, but okay.
#LainaWatchesAnne Back at the Barry's, Anne and Diana giggle and dance in their nightgowns. They head to bed in the spare room, race and jump onto the bed, and land on AUNT JOSEPHINE!
We love Aunt Josephine.
#LainaWatchesAnne This bit is super on point with the only change really being that they move around when it happens/how old the girls are due to combining the two concerts.
#LainaWatchesAnne Since Diana is worried about losing her piano lessons, Anne says she'll apologize for the both of them for what happened, saying "I've had lots of practice at making apologies before." Lol too true, though.
#LainaWatchesAnne And so the next morning, Anne goes to apologize. I will say, Aunt Jo calling them "little girls" when they're 15 already is kind of weird, but it's pretty book accruate. Aunt Jo is utterly charmed by Anne and it's a fun scene overall.
#LainaWatchesAnne Follows plays Anne completely seriously and considering she's talking about costing Diana "her career as a world-famous concert pianist", that couldn't have been easy, lol
She agrees to reinstate Diana's music lessons in exchange for Anne coming to visit her in Charlottetown now and then.
Anne makes this face
#LainaWatchesAnne Obviously Anne agrees and it really is an adorable scene. Great adaptation of a great scene.
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne and Diana spend some more time frolicking in a field of wildflowers at sunset as romantic music plays.
There is no non-queer explanation for this and you can't convince me there is.
#LainaWatchesAnne Then they read a letter from Aunt Josephine in a boat, who has sent them matching silver bangles.
#LainaWatchesAnne Back in school, Gilbert is still snubbing Anne as they take a practice exam for the Queen's entrance exam. We've mostly skipped over this plotline so far so it's a bit of an abrupt change. Suddenly Anne is worried!!!
#LainaWatchesAnne Obviously there are time limitations, but it is a bit of a shame. A lot of Miss Stacey's character is lost to this change, as well
And now it's exam time! Diana comes with Anne (she doesn't in the book) and they stay with Aunt Josephine in her giant ass mansion
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne and Diana cuddle in bed that night and is it just me or is Anne a bit of a bed hog?
#LainaWatchesAnne Bright and early the next day, Anne takes her exams and then says goodbye to Miss Stacey, who's moving to Halifax. She says, "I have my own little set of troubles" and I desperately want to know what they are.
#LainaWatchesAnne Aunt Jo, Diana, and Anne go out to dinner and their conversation about city living is very book accurate.
#LainaWatchesAnne Also, Anne is wearing her Christmas dress again. While it's still not my favourite, it is nice to see her wearing it again as that is exactly what she would do - why would she have more than one set of good formal clothes?
#LainaWatchesAnne Also, it looks more appropriate as a daytime dress, in my opinion, and they are at a matinee.
With an opera singer... who is in what looks a little more like evening wear to me?
#LainaWatchesAnne Their carriage passes Gilbert on his way to the train station and he wishes Anne good luck and says he hopes she comes in first on the exam. Gilbert is a good egg.
They're both a bit awkward and it's cute.
#LainaWatchesAnne And that wraps up the Charlottetown section and this thread! I know it's a bit of a short one but I had to split this half into 5 threads or they would have all been MASSIVE.
Tune in next time for the exam results and BIG DRAMA
#LainaWatchesAnne As always, if you enjoy these threads, please RT them!! It helps a lot.
And if you can afford it comfortably, the tip jar is open. It goes towards helping me pay down my still quite large ambulance bill ko-fi.com/A0602GN

Thanks to everyone the reception to this post also! I like to do this one every year, but it really does take a while to do, and I'm quite proud of it.
I really, really love middle grade literature and I think it does everything YA does and more while having to both work with a generally more sensitive audience and, honestly, a lot more gatekeeping and less support.
I always try to talk about queer middle grade during @queer_reads because it means a lot to me and we really don't talk about it enough, in my opinion.
I'm 28 years old and some of the times I feel most seen as a human being is reading middle grade novels, honestly.
It is like the weirdest of her books and nothing like any of the others of hers I read. The Strange Power was the other one I owned and also loved that. She was one of my favourite authors growing up.
Side note, the HELL is going on with this cover????
Things have been kind of done, and I have a snack and a drink, so are you ready for today's #LainaWatchesAnne thread???
#LainaWatchesAnne Last time, we discussed some of how Anne is seen in Japan in general, from the perspective of someone who googled a bunch of stuff but is by no means an expert.
And today, before getting into the actual episode, we have a little more backstory.
I mean, I'm a person who's broken a few toes walking into things/dropping things on my foot, but I'm incredibly clumsy.
Oh my god I just searched it and I slammed my foot into the bathtub super fucking hard on January 17th 2020. Like really badly bruised, thought I might need to tell the doctor.
SOMEHOW and honestly I don't know how because my adaptation choices have not gone in any order but "I want to talk about them" @fromankyra guessed correctly and we will be talking about the anime series today!
#LainaWatchesAnne Congratulations, you get a... whatever I promised in my tweet. Star sticker maybe?
