I asked 60 of the most prolific online creators a simple question:

If you could give one piece of advice to someone who wants to start creating online, what would it be?

Three pieces of advice popped up over and over.

Thread...
1. Get started before you're ready

"I wish I started earlier." - the biggest regret of any prolific creator.

In the beginning, it's easy to wait for conditions to be just right. Or to spend weeks putting together a plan of everything you want to share.
But here's the thing: the conditions will never be just right to start sharing online. And your journey will unfold nothing like your plan.

The creators that look like they have it all figured out? Newsflash: they don't. Everyone is flying blind, iterating as they go.
So instead of waiting around and trying to plan every step, just get started.

Then, figure it out as you go.
2. Share something every day

"Consistency is the great differentiator."

This was the most common piece of advice from these creators.

Everyone prolific creator once shared their ideas into the void.

They simply did it longer than anyone else was willing to.
And the easiest way to create that consistency is to share something every day.

One tweet, one blog post, one screenshot essay, something. One idea, into the world, every single day.
3. Be selfish

So you've started sharing and you're doing it consistently. How do you sustain it?

Two words: be selfish.

The best content is self-indulgent. To sustainably create, what you create has to provide value to *you*.
If you're creating with someone else in mind, you'll burn out.

Look at the most successful authors. They're fascinated by the ideas they explore. The byproduct is great writing.

This selfishness creates an authenticity. And this authenticity attracts an audience.
4. Start sharing in 2021

I binged @jackbutcher's Build Once, Sell Twice in one sitting.

I expected an online course about building and selling.

But it's more than that.

Build Once, Sell Twice is a mindset. A playbook.

An operating system for the 21st-century entrepreneur.

Here's the TLDR:

[Thread] Image
The TL;DR, six-word summary of Build Once, Sell Twice:

• Ideas
• People
• Problems
• Products
• Proof
• Process

This is THE operating system for the 21st-century internet entrepreneur.
Here's the operating system:

1. Start sharing ideas
2. Attract like-minded people
3. Figure out their problems
4. Build products that solve their problems
5. Extract proof you've solved their problem
6. Document/share your process along the way (which becomes a product)

I’m torn on the idea of whether or not NYC ever fully bounces back.

Those that think it does always say something along the lines of:

“It’s survived and bounced back from every other event like this.”

But this one feels different. Here are some thoughts.
The advantage of NYC is its proximity to everything.

You’re steps away from the best restaurants and experiences. Smart, ambitious people are everywhere you look.

But it’s foundation and the lifeblood of its economic engine are its millions of white-collar workers.
So a full bounce back in some shape or form depends on fully-staffed Midtown office buildings.

But that seems unlikely.

COVID is the first crisis of its kind that derails the “need” to work in an NYC office building.
