This week, over half the Republican Congress signed on to a Texas lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to invalidate millions of votes in 4 battleground states, despite having ZERO evidence of voter fraud. This is shocking but, sadly, not the least bit surprising. #velshi
2/11
Last night, the Supreme Court—including all 3 of Donald Trump’s appointees—rejected Texas’ case to overturn the election results. But one wonders whether it would have been more useful for the court to have heard it and then decided against it. #velshi

Trump’s tactics may not have worked in the ACTUAL courts, but a poll out this week indicated that 77% of Republicans believe there was fraud in this election. While most of that misinformation comes from Donald Trump himself—he’s the spark—the fuel is all around us. #velshi

Months ago, I warned that congressional candidates who hold dangerous fringe views could potentially get elected. They did, and I thought that was going to be our biggest problem moving forward: candidates whipping up conspiracies on the campaign trail. #velshi
5/11
I failed at the time to recognize that the dangers are far greater. Since Nov 3, elected members of the GOP and their constituents have pushed actual lies in favor of overturning the election and the will of the people who voted Biden in and Trump out. #velshi
6/11
It’s one thing if Biden’s victory had been like Trump’s: an Electoral College win without the popular vote. But 7 million more people voted for Joe Biden, and in responding to more than 50 cases filed, no court has found a single instance of voter fraud. #velshi
7/11
No double or triple voting, no dead people voting. Just people not voting for Donald Trump. #velshi
8/11
To the GOP’s conspiracy theorists and congressional enablers, it doesn’t matter that there’s no evidence of voter fraud and that recount after recount has shown Trump to be the loser every time. They want what Trump wants: to subvert democracy. #velshi
9/11
I don’t know whether the fringe found Trump or Trump found the fringe, but this stuff is real. From the ridiculous but increasingly dangerous “stop-the-steal” movement to the undermining of COVID precautions, Trump and his enablers have made these ideas mainstream. #velshi
10/11
Trump empowers these fringe thinkers, and they support his every perverted and unjust idea. It’s a dangerous relationship that is damaging our nation’s foundations. And Trump doesn’t seem to care. #velshi
11/11
Trump continues to test our norms, the Constitution and our freedoms under his fact-free but still substantial influence. He is, after all, still the President of the United States. #velshi

Portland still bears the scars of a summer of protest—initially kicked off by police brutality & racial injustice, then fueled by federal agents operating violently & without accountability. A movement to #DefundThePolice grew there night by night. #velshi
2/12
Since then, the discussion about the meaning of #DefundThePolice has flourished. Is it a demand to end police funding or a more nuanced call to re-allocate some of the billions spent on policing toward addressing mental health, domestic violence & substance abuse? #velshi
3/12
The debate was renewed this week when former President Obama derided #DefundThePolice as a “snappy slogan.” Obama got some pushback from progressives who believe it’s not merely a slogan but, rather, a mandate. A very specific mandate. #velshi

Courage manifests in different ways: physically, mentally, morally, emotionally. But all forms of courage are defined by the willingness to act in the face of adversity. None of those manifestations seem to apply to what Republicans are doing right now. #velshi

Republicans are standing by as Trump is potentially doing more harm to American democracy in the dying days of his administration than he did in the almost 4 destructive years that preceded them. #velshi

The “check engine” light in the Republican car has been red since early 2016, as Trump headed for his party’s nomination. The problem was serious then, but now the engine has seized, the tires are blown out and the car is careening out of control toward a cliff. #velshi

I am standing today on the ancestral lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, meaning “Seven Council Fires.” That is the proper name for the people referred to as the Sioux. #velshi

Most of Western South Dakota, and portions of neighboring North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming were part of what was once known as the Great Sioux Nation. #velshi

Here in South Dakota there are 9 federally recognized Native Nations: Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, Flandreau Santee, Lower Brule, Oglala, Rosebud, Sisseton-Wahpeton, Standing Rock and Yankton Sioux. #velshi
1/8 This week, there was movement. The General Services Administration, an independent agency of the U.S. government, acknowledged Joe Biden’s presidential victory and began formal transition procedures. #velshi
2/8 The GSA’s move opened the door for Biden to receive government data, make contact with federal agencies and gave his transition team access to government funding. #velshi
3/8 Trump has gone along with the decision, but he and his campaign continue to waste the court and the country’s time with baseless legal shenanigans. He also hasn't conceded defeat and likely won't. That takes humility and self-awareness, which are beyond his ability. #velshi

Thursday, Nov. 19, was the 157th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. At only 275 words, it’s widely considered one of the greatest political speeches ever given. In it, Lincoln emphasized healing our divided nation, while bringing equality to all citizens. #velshi
2/12
Just as memorable as the opening words—“Four score and seven years ago”—is Lincoln’s conclusion that a “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” #velshi
3/12
It used to be obvious what Lincoln meant: everyone gets to vote, and their votes create and empower the government. I don’t think I’m exaggerating to say that that idea has felt, recently, like it’s slipping away. #velshi
BREAKING: A federal judge has rejected the Pennsylvania Trump lawsuit in which Rudy Giuliani was involved. He has dismissed the suit.
US District Court Judge Matthew Brann said the Trump campaign asked him to “disenfranchise almost seven million voters” and said he could not find any case in which a plaintiff “has sought such a drastic remedy in the contest of an election.”
With such request, he said, one might expect compelling legal argument “and factual proof of rampant corruption.” Instead, he said, “this court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations.”
