You may use beautiful colors but if the structure is a mess, it doesn't matter.

I made this mistake countless times. You see it everywhere.
Why do web designers start with creating the "homepage"?
- Even a layman can tell you if he likes it or not
- It's the most visible page
- It feels real

It’s understandable.
Nevertheless, it's a sign of a bad/average at best designer.
Start with wireframing the whole thing (making structure) instead.
Use an app like @InVisionApp and draw the whole site layout there first.
Then it's time for the landing page.

Do you know how many people use mobile phones to access your page?
If you do, you know that mobile-first is a necessity.
Chances are there are at least 60 % visits from mobile.
Have their experience in mind.

It may be an engine but it's still just one part.
Ask questions such as:
- What's the purpose of the website?
- Who's your customer?
- What are the expected traffic sources?

In the process of web design it’s somehow tempting to forget about the people who will use the site:
-Different age people
-Different screens
