Brig Gen Brook Leonard, #USSPACECOM chief of staff, is speaking right now at the #Space Power Forum presented by the Air Force Association’s @MitchellStudies.
Leonard on #USSPACECOM & @SpaceForceDoD: Awesome to see the focus our nation has on increasing our #space capabilities, awareness & what we're able to do.
#USSPACECOM wants to be agile & ambidextrous. Want to be able to get after mission we have today, but take leaps & bounds into the future.
Technology: how do we take what's out there & pull in all-source data, combine it & use machine learning (hopefully AI some day), get info out in tailorable way to execute mission command at speed.
Adversaries understand our capabilities in #space & are attempting to deny those.
We're focused on a warfighting culture & organization.
Key trends regarding competition in #space: Competition is an everyday event. If you're not in the game every day, you're falling more & more behind. Every domain, every dimension, needs to be able to compete & force enemy through lots of different effects.
#USSPACECOM task: to make sure we're integrated. It's a continuous mix of competition, contingency ops & conflict all at the same time.
People are the foundation of our warfighting capabilities.
On subordinate commands: Every satellite ties to flesh & blood to the last tactical mile. @MARFORSPACE brings that in spades.
Services bring w them not only different perspectives, but ways #USSPACECOM can tie into different domains.
Partnering w commercial industry: more of a barbell diagram. On tactical end, we have commercial integration cell at CFSCC. On other end, fruitful opportunities as we partner w commercial entities.
Been fun to see how commercial partners, allies, civil, etc integrate into #USSPACECOM as we go forward & continue to compete against adversaries.
On cooperation w allies: #space is a team event. It's not only about our military allies/partners, but we encourage them to integrate w their commercial & civil allies/partners.
Our allies in Europe came on board, & are speaking out w 1 voice regarding Russia's say/do gap. We continue to promote the peaceful development of space, & it is important to have those friends, our allies, to do that.
#USSPACECOM must think, decide, act quicker than adversaries. We have to be ahead of a neer-peer adversary. We must develop ideas/thought process/testing & experimentation to take big leaps. We must continuously invest in R&D.
#USSPACECOM's capability to compete daily & globally is really important bc we would like to win without fighting. How do we project that power every day? How can we set forces to be able to fight & win w/out having to deploy someone into an AOR & project strength from there?

.@USArmy GEN James Dickinson, #USSPACECOM cmdr, at @ussfspoc establishment: Today, we formally establish what amounts to the biggest arrow in a quiver to protect & defend US/allied interests in #space.
In days of 1st #USSPACECOM 30 yrs ago, we often spoke about warfighter support. Today, we are the warfighters. We have a task to perform traditional supporting functions AND supported warfighting mission.
Our dependency on #space capabilities creates vulnerabilities. We have to mitigate those vulnerabilities, through deterrence for sure, but also through our readiness to fight & win in space.
