I am determined to find an expression of zettelkasten that makes sense to me.

An idea management system that "just works".
One that allows me to sink into a state of ordered *flow*.
Had a chance today to finally review the nuances of @beauhaan's system thanks to his interview with @RobertHaisfield.

The proposed system doesn't *quite* scratch my itch, but it was quite generative for ideas and inspiration.

I'm not building a traditional system. This won't be Luhmann's slipbox. My approach with be unorthodox — but it will work for my brain.

Rather than a "zettelkasten", what I'm *really* looking for is a universal idea management system.

The "non-actionable" companion to GTD.
This is my current framing. Which is quite close to the traditional — with the inclusion of QUESTIONS as a central component to the system.
Questions drive the progress. Too much certainty feels arrogant to me. I know nothing!!

I want to be able to capture my curiosity and uncertainty in my knowledge system. To set up a self-volleying dialogue between statement and question. Assertion and nuance-seeking inquisition
First the category of "fleeting" (which still feels like a mis-nomer to me...)

Fleeting is the "not anchored to source material" stuff. The shower thoughts, drifting ideas, epiphanies while walking. They have NO DIRECT SOURCE.

Mis-nomer because I don't see them as "fleeting".
Next "literature" (again, mis-nomer — "literature" feels to narrowed to *written* work)

These are "in your own words" summaries of the AUTHOR'S assertions. Not your own ideas.

They could come from any content I engage with (articles, tweets, books, podcasts, etc)
Then "permanent" (again, misnomer — "permanent" feels too rigid and fixed...)

These are notes that TRANSCEND a single source. They are approaching original idea. The unite various sources into a felt truth. A statement/assertion.

These achieve "page reference" status.
I feel nit-picky on the terminology, but WORDS ARE IMPORTANT.

These feel close, but not quite hitting the right intention.

fleeting ~ independent
literature ~ summary
permanent ~ "zettel"
There are also a few "non-central" notes that are important...

reference = the source details and metadata.
relevant = relating to the permanent notes, these are RELEVANT connections.
verbatim = not my words. Some things are OK to file in their non-original form.
And finally, the "creative projects" — the star of the show. The outputs that the zettelkasten generates.

The workflow here feels like
1) Capture ideas
2) Mature ideas into outlines (by browsing the zettelkasten)
3) Mature outlines into bodied works (through elaboration)

Questions are tricky. Really tricky.

Is it indicating an actionable research pursuit? Or a rhetorical prompt? Is it context-specific, or more universal? How well could you form an answer? If actionable, how urgent?

Or could it simply sit, and simmer; percolate.
As I try on my questions processes, I’m again feeling limited.

Questions can also label the time stamp of the question the author is attempting to answer. So the question really labels an answer, while preserving the target question in mind.

As such, it’s more directional.
As it relates to content, I really need several domains:

Questions indicating the purpose of the highlighted passage.

Questions indicating gaps in understanding.

Now for "how does this look in Roam"...

Emerging ideas to follow.
My goal is to MINIMIZE RESISTANCE to MAXIMIZE FLOW.

I want to capture ALL resonant ideas, and to move things up the maturity progression as quickly as my clarity allows.
Common inputs for "literature" notes/questions:

Podcasts: @AirrAudio
Articles: @worldbrain
Twitter: @readwiseio
Books: @AmazonKindle

All sent to @RoamResearch in a standardized template using the @readwiseio integration *chef's kiss*

Ever find yourself sitting there, working on something, and an old memory pops into your head?

An isolated moment, nearly forgotten, but brought into your awareness somehow — by some thread, some connection or trigger.
I find these moments amazing. While I might not have actively recalled the memory if I tried — it’s there, just waiting for the right resurfacing trigger.
What’s more amazing still, is having the means to capture them as they naturally arise.

— surprised at their arrival, and able to save them into a growing collection of similar fleeting memories.

It feels related to ideas I’ve been considering around simplicity and complexity.
The meme represents the three levels of knowing.

Brilliant.

Been hovering around how to structure and organize sets of knowledge.

Building a map — piece by piece.

Today I got some clarity.

Course and lecture design holds some important clues!
A good course and a good lecture have intentional design elements that OREINT the learner.

That build appropriate perspective for the learner, so they can see how the material interacts with the rest of their knowledge or the domain.
There is a map, hidden in the linear structure of many courses.

I want to deconstruct the linearity, to build the multi-dimensional.

BROWSER QUESTION

Looking for a way to automatically log out out certain websites after closing the browser session.

There are *some* websites that I do not want to log out of, but some that I do.

e.g. Always log out of Google, Facebook, Roam; but “stay logged in” for others.
I use Brave and Vivaldi.

Right now, I delete all cookies, passwords, auto-fill, and logins after each session. But this seems to be a *global* setting.
I think, more broadly, I just need to have a more cohesive browsing strategy.

I want:
- Privacy (ads, trackers)
- Performance (so Roam is fast)
- Ease (in places I want ease)
- Resistance (in places I don’t want ease)
- Extensions
