Today in 192 the Emperor Commodus was assassinated, strangled in his bath by a wrestler, bringing the Nerva-Antonine dynasty to an end. Three years later the Senate under Septimius Severus deified this Roman Hercules.
161-192 AD
The Roman Hercules, died today in 192AD.
Emperor Commodus took part in 735 public battles in the arena, not just against gladiators but against wild animals like lions & even elephants. Hollywood portrayed him as cowardly in 2000 but this is not reality. What was cowardly was how he was assassinated.
Despite what Hollywood says, Marcus Aurelius never tried to disinherit Commodus. In fact he took extraordinary measures to ensure Commodus would succeed him smoothly. Marcus Aurelius wanted his son to be emperor after him. Period.
Commodus was certainly not a villain to the Christian minority. Influenced by his concubine Marcia (before she turned on him) he had good relations with Pope Victor I and granted his request to recall the exiled Christians from Sardinia. ✝️
Far from being a power-mad autocrat, Emperor Commodus was actually content to delegate power for day-to-day affairs to others. This was criticized by the elite class and Commodus was finally motivated to take matters in hand himself, tired of the efforts to undermine him.
Consider the fact that the reign of Commodus was one of peace rather than war and building projects with no major disasters. There were problems, certainly, but there were no major invasions or natural calamities. This means critics have to get creative to complain.
And yes Commodus *was* Marcus Aurelius’ son. The rumor that he was not was just a cope by those who hated Commodus but didn’t want to smear the wildly popular Marcus Aurelius. Commodus was his son and he was the one Marcus Aurelius wanted to succeed him.

Jonkheer Alidius Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer was the last Governor-General of the Dutch East Indes. He ruled by martial law after the German invasion of the Netherlands and presided over the desperate defense against Japan in 1942. 🇳🇱 Image
Lt. Admiral Conrad Helfrich was overall military commander in the Dutch East Indies at the start of WW2. His aggressive tactics earned him the nickname “Ship-a-day Helfrich” as his Dutch O-Boats drew first blood against the Japanese (outperforming the US). 🇳🇱 Image
Rear Admiral Karel Doorman came from a Dutch Catholic family with a long tradition of military service. He commanded Allied forces in the futile Battle of the Java Sea from his cruiser HNLMS De Ruyter, attacking aggressively and choosing to go down with his ship. 🇳🇱 Image

Maj.Gen. Winfield Scott, hero of the US-MX War and a Virginian who stayed with the Union, was senior officer of the USA in 1861 but too infirm to take to the field. He advocated economic war, starving the south into submission with a blockade but Lincoln wanted aggressive action. Image
Maj.Gen. Irvin McDowell led US forces to embarrassing defeat at the 1st battle of Manassas. Pushed to action against his better judgement, his plan was too complicated for his troops. After a second spanking from Beauregard he was sidelined for the duration of the war. Image
Maj.Gen. George B. McClellan was beloved by his soldiers but hated by Lincoln for being too cautious (and a Democrat). Lee thought highly of him, he offered few opportunities to exploit. Never disastrously defeated, Lincoln fires him after he stopped Lee’s invasion of Maryland. Image

The leaders of the three major Confederate armies and senior naval officers. ImageImageImageImage
The senior most field generals of the Confederacy. In order of seniority:
2. A.S. Johnston
3. Lee
4. J.E. Johnston
5. Beauregard Image
Gen. Robert E. Lee of Virginia led the Army of N.Virginia 62-65. The most brilliant soldier the New World has produced. His victories at 2nd Manassas & Chancellorsville being particularly outstanding, he wasn’t *always* right but almost always and certainly never met his match. Image

The ideal King, Arthur did not really die but was only horribly wounded. He was taken away to the legendary island of Avalon to rest and recovery. One day he will return to lead his people against their enemies. Image
Prince Csaba was the youngest son of Attila the Hun. Not only will he return, riding down from the stars, whenever his Hungarian descendants are in danger but he has reportedly already done so several times at moments of great crisis. Image
Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa didn’t really drown and get pickled while on Crusade. He’s half asleep under the Kyffhäuser mountains and when his beard grows around it or the ravens stop flying (I’ve heard both), he’ll wake up and lead the Germans to victory once more. Image

The British Fascisti was founded in 1923 by Miss Rotha Lintorn-Orman and included many suffragettes. It was though more like a really militant wing of the Tories than a doctrinally fascist party. Stopping Labour was their goal more than changing the UK 🇬🇧. ImageImageImageImage
Because their focus was on what they opposed rather than what they were for, the British Fascisti did not last long and splintered into other groups and was eventually surpassed by the British Union of Fascists. Lintorn-Orman btw detested Mosley as he wasn’t a conservative. 🇬🇧 ImageImageImageImage
