THREAD: Portland's Antifa movement held a New Years Eve demonstration Thursday night that became the first declared riot of 2021.

Police confronted the crowd with riot munitions as activists shot fireworks at them.

Activists set fire to a "Blue Lives Matter" flag outside the Justice Center shortly before Portland Police declared the event a riot.

In some instances, the Black-bloc clad activists were able to get riot police to retreat.

Toward the end of this clips, police continue to disperse pepper spray while walking backwards.

The conflict between the activists and police continued back and forth. At the beginning of this clip you'll see/hear the firing of one of the riot munitions.

Police used riot shields for cover while protesters formed their own shield wall with umbrellas.

"Fuck the police and fuck [Democratic Mayor of Portland] Ted Wheeler!" an organizer said to chants of "Fuck Ted Wheeler!"

"It's New Years and we are still out here," they said.

In one instance police filled the streets with tear gas and charged at the crowd, which mostly retreated.

My contributor @MaranieRae was trapped in the gas, and a police officer got in front of her, and then pushed her when he noticed she was there.

One Starbucks was smashed.
