this also a good reminder to me to get back to work on the twine/website version of my rec threads, so this is easier to collect together + i can rec abandonware and the like

i will admit one of my favorite little joys of doing these threads is getting my + older gens who played a ton of point and click adventures pointed to where they can buy those now and what new games have come out since, and exposing younger gens to the greats in the genre

like every time i see someone go "OMG, i grew up with this, and i can still get it!" that's a lovely little joy, being able to bring back that old fondness to them

and sharing game history to younger ones without being elitist "you HAVEN'T played (x)??? pathetic" is great

said before, but you get much better results with this kind of stuff if you pitch those old games based on your own enthusiasm for them, not on how 'important' they are. classic myst really is a still great game, still holds up! love to see people play it for the first time

also being able to get people to play sierra adventure games at all by going "play with a guide, i will not judge you, and i grew up with these motherfuckers"

i'm repeating and rambling rn but it's really just fun and good seeing this stuff. telling people who grew up with configuring soundblaster but fell out of games that ron gilbert made a new point and click adventure and seeing them get pumped, for example, that's great

basically i'm a predictable result of what happens to a kid who barely had console games for the longest time, but did have a programmer dad who bought every single point and click adventure and PC fantasy RPG on the market. from conquests of the longbow to betrayal at krondor

other kids: beating super mario world

me: readjusting the monkey island code wheel or trying to guess the trivia on leisure suit larry's access block so i can see a boob
