Okay, now that I've remembered where I was, are we all ready for the next #LainaWatchesAnne thread??
#LainaWatchesAnne Check out this shot of the store! Image
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne is wearing a very sharp outfit herself here, the plaid, and is buying some fabric for the White Sands Hotel concert.

And it IS white organdy, nice!
#LainaWatchesAnne This is a Diana scene in the book, but I love this set and also Anne's interaction with people in town, who clearly like her, so I can't complain too much.
#LainaWatchesAnne On her way home, a certain Mr. Gilbert Blythe offers her a ride home.

"You promised we were gonna be friends," he says, and I protest! She did no such thing!
#LainaWatchesAnne But she takes him up on the offer and they make awkward conversation and Anne actually apologizes for what happened by the pond.

"Life's too short to hold grudges," Gilbert says.
"Fuck you, Gilbert Blythe," Book!Anne would want to say, but it's fine.
#LainaWatchesAnne The dialogue between them comes right from the prose in the book, though, and I will say, I absolutely love Gilbert's expression as he listens to her Queen's plans. Image
#LainaWatchesAnne It's just really cute - he's trying to tease her honestly quite gently but she's so on edge and stiff that she still takes everything as a deep insult. He asks about the concert and she DEMANDS to know who told home.

Anne, it's a small town. Things get around.
#LainaWatchesAnne He tells her that he's going to try and get her an encore so to have two pieces ready and that's not in the book but it's really freaking cute.
#LainaWatchesAnne Then he basically dares her into letting him escort her to the concert (LOL) and it takes her a moment to realize what she's said. Honestly, this part is super funny? They're so awkward.
#LainaWatchesAnne Really, both the 1934 movie and this mini-series play up the romance between Anne and Gilbert, but it's much more in character in this - from both of them. Gilbert in the 1934 one is just unpleasant and the romance takes up TOO much of the movie - and is cheesy.
#LainaWatchesAnne Personally I enjoy a slow burn, and I wouldn't mind seeing someone take this story in that direction, but except for like two thing, I've liked how they have done it here.
#LainaWatchesAnne Mrs. Rachel spots Gilbert dropping Anne off and I just want to show this because it's super cute Image
#LainaWatchesAnne Marilla is very concerned about the handholding, but Matthew is just like "He has to hold her hand to help her out of the buggy."

This is again 1934's influnce! Marilla really has no problem with Gilbert in the book. But she comes up to Anne's room to apologize
#LainaWatchesAnne Honestly I hate the forbidden romance element. Seeing Marilla get emotional about Ann leaving makes me all mushy, but her saying Anne shouldn't get attachd to Gilbert just isn't a thing in the book and I am really not a fan.
#LainaWatchesAnne In the next scene, Anne basically tells Diana to give Gilbert a Dear John letter and I SWEAR I've written that sentence already. This is from the 1934 movie too!

I'm way too aro for this added drama
#LainaWatchesAnne Thankfully it's concert night! Marilla fusses about Anne's dress being too thin for the weather and we're back on book.
#LainaWatchesAnne I love this shot. Anne's dress looks nice and her hair is very sweet - and the rose and the little things she's added to the room, and Matthew giving her the necklace I like this a lot. Image
#LainaWatchesAnne Marilla's basically fussing just to fuss, very book accurate, but they actually get to go to the concert, unlike in the book, so that's a nice change.

And this is the White Sands Hotel! Image
#LainaWatchesAnne Gilbert sent a note back with Diana that he'll be coming to the concert anyways and he hopes Anne can still consider him a friend.

I really don't like that Anne's stagefright here is tied to her issues with Gilbert. Not everything is about Gilbert!!
#LainaWatchesAnne I kind of got the impression in the book that the audience for this concert was larger? Maybe this is the biggest room they could get, lol. Image
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne's reciting goes well, and she only looks a *little* like she's going to pass out on stage. Gilbert looks very proud of her, as does everyone except Josie Pye.

And she does in fact get an encore, though we don't see it.
#LainaWatchesAnne At the little party after, she tries to talk to Gilbert but gets interrupted. Josie and Gibert bicker 'cause Josie's jealous, lol. Anne tries to catch Gilbert, but he's taken off because we need romance drama, I guess.
#LainaWatchesAnne Diana and Anne stand in the romantic setting sun on a beautiful cliff... and talks about Gilbert.

*SIGHES IN QUEER* ImageImage
#LainaWatchesAnne Diana apparently wants to be rich so she can spend her whole summer at a hotel, "eating nothing but ice cream and chicken salad".

Dream big, Diana.
#LainaWatchesAnne Besides the extra (and imo, unnecessary) romantic drama, this plot has been quite faithful. Also, they cut out the rude weight remark Anne makes in the book, so yay.
#LainaWatchesAnne And now we're at Bright River to see Anne off for Queen's. Marilla fusses at Anne a bit over nothing and you can see how much she doesn't want Anne to go.

We get a couple big squishy hugs and Marilla is clearly trying not to choke up. Matthew looks SO proud. Image
#LainaWatchesAnne You will also note Marilla's nice clothes have not changed, besides maybe a new shirt. Why would she make new ones when these are still absolutely fine ImageImageImage
#LainaWatchesAnne Marilla is very worried about Anne getting "terrible lonesome" and Matthew goes "You mean we'll get terrible lonesome." Their exchange here is so lovely and I get all sniffly at it.

THEY LOVE THEIR GIRL SO MUCH
#LainaWatchesAnne In Charlottetown, Aunt Josephine tries to talk Anne into staying with her, but it's too far from school so she'll be staying at a boarding house.
#LainaWatchesAnne This shot, also, is GREAT. It completely echoes her first night at Green Gables, and how alone she felt. ImageImage
#LainaWatchesAnne She's sad and loney and homesick

The next scene we get is Anne in class, nervous. Anne and Gilbert will both be getting their 2 year teacher's licence in on year.
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne runs into Josie Pye on campus, who immediately insults her. Anne turns down her invitation to lunch which is kind of not my favourite because I loved in the book how she was so homesick that she was like "I'll take a Pye, sure."

It's a bit too girl hate.
#LainaWatchesAnne But Jane and Ruby run up and are super excited to see Anne. They also tell Anne about the Avery scholarship, and drag Anne off with them.
#LainaWatchesAnne After a week, Anne and Aunt Josephine have tea. Anne says she has friends at school, but nobody particularly close, and Aunt Jo's like "But what about the d?" and advises her to leave room in her life for romance.
#LainaWatchesAnne So Anne goes to leave a note with Gilbert and sees him studying with a girl. We needed MORE romance drama, so this upsets Anne and she runs off, tearing up the letter.
#LainaWatchesAnne Cut to Marilla reading a letter from Anne back at Green Gables! The term is almost over and exams are coming quick.
#LainaWatchesAnne Parts of the letter are actually from earlier in the book when she wrote to Diana during the entrance exams. Since they had Diana come with her, they use it here instead. Nice touch.

Matthew is worried about her.
#LainaWatchesAnne So then it's the end of term and after exams! Results have been posted and Gilbert won the Gold Medal, but Anne won the Avery!

(By having the highest grades. Go Anne.)
#LainaWatchesAnne And that's all of the full year of college Anne does! It's about 8 minutes. And honestly it feels a bit rushed. The Queen's parts aren't the longest in the book, but they did feel pretty substantial.

It's just a little weird it goes so fast.
#LainaWatchesAnne And that's it for today!

Thursday we'll actually be FINISHING the series!!

Okay so my legal middle name(/initial) is one of the letters I couldn't say as a kid and had to speech therapy for.

My speech therapist told me I was wrong about what about middle name was.
My legal first name's spelled wrong constantly, there's another name a letter off that I get called constantly, and sometimes people just assign me a whole new name but that one still pops my corn.
Also, despite my name being in both my email and my blog title, I get blog emails calling me Lania, Liana, Lana, Laino and on one memorable occasion, Lauren.

#LainaWatchesAnne Oscar Wilde once said, "We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell."

So 2016 Anne had a sequel released February 20th, 2016, a year after the first movie came out. Let's just do this. Image
#LainaWatchesAnne I don't think it was released theatrically, but I have no background information because no one cares. It doesn't even have its own wikipedia page.

And why is it called Anne of Green Gables: The Good Stars? No clue. The movie never explains it.
#LainaWatchesAnne It's certainly not something from the book. I got nothin' here.

I guess "2 Green 2 Gables" was taken already.

Alright, after Tuesday's wild thread, are we ready for another round of #LainaWatchesAnne?
#LainaWatchesAnne This thread is going to be a little different as the state of musicals means I don't have access to a lot of what I'll be talking about.

Hence why today, we're talking more about Anne and musicals in general than one specific one.
#LainaWatchesAnne To start, let's talk about what I'm calling, for clarity's sake, the Charlottetown Festival musical.

Thanks to everyone the reception to this post also! I like to do this one every year, but it really does take a while to do, and I'm quite proud of it.
I really, really love middle grade literature and I think it does everything YA does and more while having to both work with a generally more sensitive audience and, honestly, a lot more gatekeeping and less support.
I always try to talk about queer middle grade during @queer_reads because it means a lot to me and we really don't talk about it enough, in my opinion.

I'm 28 years old and some of the times I feel most seen as a human being is reading middle grade novels, honestly.

My favourite part of this is Jenny just vehemently going to bat for LJ Smith and telling people to buy her books.

I suggest The Night of the Solstice myself! It's weird and kind of creepy and cool
It is like the weirdest of her books and nothing like any of the others of hers I read. The Strange Power was the other one I owned and also loved that. She was one of my favourite authors growing up.
Side note, the HELL is going on with this cover????
