Today is the #StopTheSteal rally in DC, where Proud Boys & other far-right extremists have descended on the capital in an attempt to intimidate officials into reversing the election results
We'll be adding coverage from various sources to this thread throughout the day & evening
Streams show that the crowds have reached the Capitol building. Law enforcement has reinforced their barricades with officers both in and out of riot gear.
Mace is being used at points where protesters are attacking the barriers.
Parts of the crowd continue to try to carry away the metal barricades.
Audible pops that crowd members have called "flash bangs" have been heard as well.
Many now appear to be trying to make their way to the building through this construction scaffolding.
Protesters have made it to the doors of the Capitol Building.
The Stop The Steal protesters are now inside the building. Staff were already evacuated. @igorbobic reports the police appear to be trying to deescalate the situation
After rushing into the building, it seems like many in the crowd are now making their way out. One is heard muttering about wanting a few strands of "Pelosi's hair," while another said he wanted her head.
"We're taking our country back from the globalists. Next time won't be so peaceful."
Correction: the "nobody dies" remark was a comment.
Other comments: "burn the tr*****s" and "BOOMERWAFFEN ACTIVATE"
Another comment on the stream: "TOLD US TO COPE GIVE THEM THE ROPE"
Referring to the Day of the Rope when neo-Nazis will hang their opposition, from the Turner Diaries.
Capitol police appear to be attempting to clear one entrance to the building's chambers. Protesters have made a push but police appear to have closed the door.
Despite repeated attempts by police to take back the main rotunda reports from @BGOnTheScene show that demonstrators still have effective control of the building.
Rebel's Keean Bexte is at the QAnon/MAGA rally. Yesterday it was announced that vacationers will not have access to a sickness benefit for quarantine upon re-entering the country.
In a video meant to be a call for peace to his followers, Trump spends a majority of his time repeating claims of election fraud, saying he won a "landslide victory."
"Go home, we love you, you are very special."
Crowds now appear to mostly have left the Capitol grounds. It's still daylight in DC, and more events are expected to play out during the night.
We'll continue monitoring the situation throughout.
Proud Boy Eddie Block is still live streaming from the roof of the Capitol Building. Claims that police are unsure of how to get him down.
Another stream is showing the cops pushing the remaining group even further away from the Capitol Building. The crowd is now alleged to be mostly contained in the parking lot.
Officers dressed in fatigues, believed to belong to the National Guard, have formed a shield wall and are pushing the crowd back further while Capitol police spray them with mace.
Despite the earlier effort to push part of the crowd back, law enforcement is now standing around while parts of the crowd mill about. It is now over an hour after a 6pm curfew set by DC authorities.
This is a very sharp contrast to the events that took place during DC's BLM protests in June.
There, just before curfew, National Guard and police forced a crowd back to clear a path for Trump to St. John’s Church for a photo opportunity.
It's being reported that lawmakers intend to return to the Capitol to finish the counting of Electoral College votes this evening. cbsnews.com/live-updates/e…
CBS' @alanhe says US Senators are on the way back into the building now.
To chants of "traitors" and "fuck antifa," DC police are forcing a group of Trump supporters to remain in their hotel, rather than going back out into the street.
The doors are closed but they are using bullhorns to yell through the glass.
Reporting by @ArnoRosenfeld managed to isolate one man wearing a "Camp Auschwitz" sweater during the storming of the Capitol Building in DC.
Just like after Charlottesville, Canadians are asking if what happened in Washington DC could happen north of the border. The tragic part is we don’t need to wonder what extremism will look like in Canada.
Canadian Ranger Corey Hurren was arrested after he drove his truck into the gates of Rideau Hall. On July 2, he allegedly carried 4 firearms & a note addressed to Justin Trudeau.
A look into his social media accounts suggests he’s a follower of QAnon. vice.com/en/article/z3e…
The day after the violence in Washington DC, Kevin Michael Hollman of Saskatoon was charged with 2nd-degree murder for allegedly killing his mother.
Social media shows he may have been a QAnon adherent & conspiracy theorist.
What appears to be Hollman's YouTube channel has posted a series of videos with titles like "Drain the Swamp" and "Adrenochrome Hops," a reference to the QAnon conspiracy theory.
On camera, he declares "I am a Trump supporter and an anti-masker." /2
Posters referencing "the Great Awakening," a QAnon concept along with the website linked to on his YouTube have shown up around Saskatoon. /3
After almost 5 years, the Law Society of Ontario has chosen to take no further action against a lawyer who advertised in the pro-Nazi, Holocaust-denying and misogynist tabloid Your Ward News. lawtimesnews.com/resources/prof…
The 2016 complaint was filed by CAHN board member Richard Warman. The committee found that the "placement of the ad was not in the public interest & inconsistent with the professionalism standards under the Rules of Professional Conduct," however, no action is being taken.
Lawyer David Faed said he was unaware of the contents of Your Ward News and chose to stop advertising with them in 2017, the same year the courts ordered its editor, James Sears, and publisher, Leroy St. Germaine, to cease publication.
With the bulk of the crowds gathered near the White House for speeches, including Trump himself, workers have been boarding up BLM Plaza ahead of anticipated action later during the day.
New reporting has revealed a former criminal intelligence analyst for the RCMP classified New Brunswick energy protesters as “violent Aboriginal extremists” while also serving as admin on a group for current and former Mounties that included racist remarks aptnnews.ca/national-news/…
Some of the analyst’s public work focused on anti-fracking protests led by people in Elsipogtog First Nation near Rexton. APTN alleges that while Tim O’Neil was writing reports for RCMP leadership, he was also an admin on the "RCMP Mates" Facebook group aptnnews.ca/national-news/…
Previous reporting by APTN found that the 12,000 member group hosted racist comments aimed at Indigenous Peoples and other minority groups. O’Neil left after being contacted by the network, but not before advising members to delete posts “even the least bit controversial”
