This is why I can't feel like we weathered this. I was watching people in the House tweet that they were crouching on the ground with shots fired into the chambers, and said to my husband, "We're going to watch some senators die." It seems like only luck we didn't.
The only people who weren't completely rocked by today are people who don't have a lot of access to news information or people who have an abiding belief in the inherent goodness of Trump fanatics with weaponry. So you're either the terrified, the ignorant, or the depraved.
We also have this twisted ritual in the US where we're expected to be good sports about fascist civilians waving machine guns at us because after the gun is away from your face you're supposed to have known they weren't going to shoot you. If they were you'd already be dead.
Most open carry demonstrations are like this. If you're upset in the moment, you're hysterical. After the demonstration, you'll see there was no danger. If there was danger, you'd already be dead and wouldn't be available for comment.

Hey @Franklin_Graham, let me see if I've got this. After weeks of calling his supporters to protest voting centers and state buildings, Trump met an angry horde on the mall. He then told them to go to the Capitol, which they did, and then he encouraged them once they were inside.
But little did Trump know, he sent the wrong mob. Instead of sending the godly Trump mob he wanted to send, he sent the bad Antifa mob! Oops!

Even if this is true, and it isn’t, does the “oops wrong mob” theory really make Trump any better?
Anyway, not to let anyone off the hook this morning, I understand that starting today it's important that we don't prosecute anyone who committed a crime at the Capitol yesterday, because otherwise they might get mad and commit crimes.

I think we all critically underestimate the number of Christians-yes, including devout, vocal, conservative, professional Christians- who don't really know what the crucifixion and resurrection are and why it's part of Christian belief.
In popular teaching, the crucifixion and resurrection have pretty well been crowded out by "accepting Jesus," which you could easily do without even knowing Jesus was crucified. Same with believing Jesus "died for your sins," for which the resurrection is pretty extraneous.
I would have died before I admitted it, but I think for most of my young adult years I was completely confused by the crucifixion and resurrection. Most of what I heard about it didn't make any sense (turns out popular atonement theologies are v bad), and

Short thread: gents, I am going to kindly ask you guys to stop asking public-facing Christian women what they do about 1 Tim 2. I don’t know about other women on here, but people ask me this all. The. Time.
Here’s why I’m asking this. The most obvious reason is that this little passage has been written about so, so much, and there is an ocean of material out there about how women have read this passage while remaining faithful to their vocations.
It’s all out there, and it’s all very googleable. It is really tiring to repeat oneself again and again about this verse, especially when this is so often done to get women to stop talking or to misdirect or redirect them into a tired debate.

Thread I spent too much time on:
Every day, I get emails and DMs from evangelical kids under 18. I don't answer most of my "fan mail," as it were (most of it isn't from fans :P), but I answer every single one of these. Because every single time, it breaks my heart.
You wouldn't believe how much mail I get from kids who are afraid of losing their faith, their families, and their identities. You wouldn't believe how many people come to me after watching hours of debate online and want me to tell them how to process it.
So many of these kids come to me after spending hundreds of dollars on books and online subscriptions. They come to me with encyclopedic reading lists, and they want me to add to it. They have questions about theological concepts I didn’t even know about when I was their age.

The evangelical belief that seems to die the hardest in deconstructionists and deconverts is that the most important thing is to know and believe the right things. Correct behavior and ethics are either secondary/auxiliary or will follow naturally from right thinking.
It seems very hard for us to shake the belief that knowledge will save us. Everywhere I look I see people explaining knowledge about how wearing a mask saves others and not yourself, that even if you don't feel sick you can get others sick, etc., etc. etc.
What if the problem isn't a lack of knowledge? What if people know all those things, but just don't really care? You can be the most informed person in the world, but it really doesn't matter at all if you're not a virtuous person.

LOL Cheezburger wrote an article about me watching Assassin 33 AD

@Cheezburger We're going back for seconds! XD
The first scene involves a first date where our heroine tries to get the scientist hero to loosen up. She makes him take off his striped polo shirt and put on a solid colored polo shirt. He is immediately cool.
