Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Over the last 24 hrs we have identified 968 new cases & completed about 14.8K tests. Our positivity rate is about 6.4%. There are 871 people in hospital, incl 139 in ICU. Sadly, 24 new deaths were reported. (1/8)
We have seen a decrease in the spread of COVID-19 since the restrictions were implemented in early December - a testament to the hard work and sacrifice of many. However, the spread of the virus is still very high in our province. (2/8)
We still average well over 1,000 new cases daily. Lower than the 1,877 on Dec. 7, but still too high. There are now more than 13K active cases in AB, down from Dec. 13 when there were more than 21,000 cases, but still far from the 1K-2K cases through summer/early fall. (3/8)
Alberta’s peak hospitalization for COVID-19 patients was on Dec. 30 w/ 953 admissions, 145 in ICU. We have come down slightly but our hospitalizations remain very high. Our health care system is still under extreme pressure, impacting our ability to care for all Albertans. (4/8)
Prior to significant spread after Thanksgiving, our peak hospitalization was 94 cases. Today, our numbers are almost 10X that w/o yet seeing impact of the holidays. We will monitor the spread over the coming weeks. (5/8)
Schools will resume in-person learning on Monday. In the fall, we saw that in-school transmission was not the main driver for cases in the school-aged population. Only 6% of cases were determined to have been acquired at school. (6/8)
The key to keeping schools, workplaces, continuing care facilities & the rest of society healthy is limiting transmission in our communities. That is why it is essential that we continue to keep the current measures in place. (7/8)
This has been a challenging last 4 weeks, but we cannot relax our grip. We must stay the course. I ask ABs to limit in-person interactions as much as possible, in every facet of our lives. The progress we make over the coming weeks will determine how the coming months look. (8/8)

We are working hard to immunize Albertans as quickly & safely as possible. @shandro and I have issued a statement clarifying some misinformation that’s circulating. (1/5) alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…
Early on in planning for #COVID19AB immunization, @AHS_media was asked to devise a strategy to ensure that vaccine wastage was minimized. This is in place & working well (2/5)
The vaccine cannot be re-frozen or put in a fridge. Doses are thawed according to pre-scheduled appointments. Appts are overbooked to ensure that workers are always in line. If no appointments are left but doses available, on-site staff are immunized to prevent waste. (3/5)
