The coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately affected communities of color. But so far, white people have gotten most of the #COVID19 shots.

Insider analyzed vaccination data across six states. Here’s what we found.

Insider looked at data from states with the largest proportions of Black residents. Six states publish their data by race. Across these states, vaccinations for Black people and other minorities lagged behind vaccinations for white people.

This vaccine shortfall is striking because research shows that Black Americans and Black healthcare workers have made up a disproportionate number of coronavirus cases and deaths.

To better understand how COVID-19 hits some communities harder than others, we zeroed in on two New York City boroughs: The Bronx and Manhattan.

The vaccine distribution disparity also raises questions about what states are doing to ensure vaccines are going to the most vulnerable Americans.

Vaccination data analysis showed the widest racial disparity in North Carolina. As of Friday, 80% of 109,799 shots had gone to white people.

Roughly 21% of North Carolina's population is Black.

Data from Mississippi showed a similar trend. As of Friday, white people made up about 65% of the state's 30,691 vaccinations.

About 37% of Mississippi's population is Black.

Black Americans are also those most hesitant about getting a shot. Their hesitancy stems from a long history of racial discrimination and mistreatment by the US healthcare system.

The bill contains $288 billion for a small-business loan program, $180 billion to boost unemployment insurance, and $16 billion to distribute the coronavirus vaccine and help public-health workers track people who are infected.
