“The officer said that many of the widely spread images of smiling marauders, wandering the halls dressed in absurd costumes, had the effect of downplaying how well prepared some of the rioters were to overtake the building, and even to capture and kill Congress members.” 
It is glaringly obvious the insurrection included police officers, and that they fully expected to use their positions of authority to gain cooperation from the Capitol Police, but were willing to injure or kill them if they stood in the way.
The efficient evacuation and the heroes who held the barricade of the House chamber doors are the only reasons this didn’t end with dead legislators.
