Thanks to all of yall for tuning in. And as always, thank you to @AlexWitt for having me. I had to talk fast and say a lot in a short time. So let's recap what I was trying to say:
The insurrection was a violent reaction from people who believe that the election should be determined solely by the candidate who won the majority of the white vote.
That's what it boils down to. Not economic anxiety. Not the idea that Biden Democrats will expand government.
This is not new: Dems have not won the white vote in a presidential contest since JFK in 1960.
What IS new is the elevation and rewarding of voices who are willing to say the racist, xenophobic stuff out loud. Hawley. Cruz. State legislators. Trump. And all their enablers.
Since im a Christian, and it's Sunday, there is a hopeful note:
Much like their ancestors, the insurrectionists are fighting for a Lost Cause. They won't win. They are already eating themselves: harassing Lindsay Graham. Calling for enabler in chied Pence to be hung.
These people will destroy themselves, eventually, or push themselves into oblivion. It's already underway. In process.
My worry is how many good and decent people they will hurt or kill while destroying themselves. Just ask Heather Heyer. Or Richard Collins III.
So that's what I wanted to say. As always, thank you for watching, and thanks to @msnbc for having me.
PS: I didn't do an #HBCU this week, but many thanks for the kind compliments on my TRUST BLACK WOMEN sweatshirt. I got it from @style_district, a Black woman owned small business. You can find it at this link:
Last night the US Attorney for the Northern District of GA, BJ Pak, resigned before his planned stop date of 1/20/21. This is significant for a few reasons.
Thread:
First, it's important to state the obvi: Pak resigned on the day of the GA senate runoff elections. Which, no matter who wins, will be decided by razor thin margins, likely in both races.
No matter which party wins, if the margins are thin enough, the other side will conduct formal and legal electoral challenges. These challenges will carry more weight if they are initiated by the US Attorney's office, as opposed to being initiated by the GA GOP, or say Giuliani
Another thing that I'd like to address. George Floyd was detained by police for allegedly passing a fake $20 bill during a trip to the corner store. That's why police responded to the scene in the first place.
1. We don't know that it was a counterfeit bill.
2. We don't know that George Floyd knew that it was a counterfeit bill.
It is impossible to establish that he had the mens rea (intent) to have committed a crime. But that's not my point here.
My point is that if you run a corner store, you are an important member of a community. As a member of that community, you've likely seen George Floyd before that day. And you'll see him again after than day.
