On this day in history three years ago, ICE detained immigrant rights leader #RaviRagbir, and police arrested community members protesting this injustice. A reminder that when people stand up for immigrant rights, they are not treated with kid gloves. 1/ wnyc.org/story/arrests-…
Ravi Ragbir, Jean Montrevil, and @NewSanctuaryNYC stood up against cruel and inhumane deportation policies. For that, they were surveilled, arrested, detained, and transferred to an immigration prison in FL in January 2018. 2/ theintercept.com/2018/01/19/ice…
Jean, co-founder of @NewSanctuaryNYC and congregant of @judsonchurchnyc was deported to Haiti on Jan.16, 2018, after coming to the U.S. as lawful permanent resident more than 30 years ago. ICE's actions separated him from his four U.S. citizen children. 3/ theintercept.com/2020/01/16/jea…
ICE continues to pursue Ravi's deportation (as recently as this Friday the government filed papers to try to get rid of the federal lawsuit staying Ravi's deportation). Ravi continues to fight for his freedom and stand up for immigrant rights. 4/ documentedny.com/2020/10/30/rav…
Ravi and Jean were not the only ones targeted for speaking out. 18 community members, including NYC elected leaders @JumaaneWilliams and @ydanis, were arrested during the protest against ICE's actions that occurred 3 years ago today. 5/ nytimes.com/2018/01/12/nyr…
Retaliation against immigrant rights defenders is widespread. We've documented more than one thousand instances of retaliation by federal agencies - surveillance, arrests, fines, detention, transfers, deportation, criminal prosecution, and more. 6/ theintercept.com/2020/11/01/ice…
This week we're bringing these issues to Congress through a virtual briefing. Join us at bit.ly/immrights-jan13. 7/
We're also joining @judsonchurchnyc to support a month of action for Jean Montrevil. Learn more and take action at bringjeanhome.org/january 7/

And on this day, I wanted to share my personal gratitude and love for all the people who stood up for immigrant justice on Jan. 11, 2018... Ravi, Amy Gottlieb, Ravi's Defense Committee, Jean, Jani Cauthen, @NewSanctuaryNYC, and so many more. #YouCantDeportAMovement /9

Federal agencies have attempted to silence the immigrant rights movement more than 1,010 times. Want to hear our voices? The Immigrant Rights Clinic @nyulaw and @NewSanctuaryNYC launch immigrantrightsvoices.org to #ProtectImmigrantVoices (a thread). theintercept.com/2020/11/01/ice…
Retaliation against dissent isn’t new. But over the last four years, we’ve seen an explosive rise in the use of surveillance, arrest, detention, deportation, & prosecution against immigrant activists & defenders. immigrantrightsvoices.org
For those of us at Immigrant Rights Clinic @nyulaw & @NewSanctuaryNYC, this hit home in 2018 when ICE detained @NewSanctuaryNYC leaders Ravi Ragbir & Jean Montrevil in a joint operation after they spoke out against the cruelty of the deportation machine. theintercept.com/2018/01/19/ice…

THREAD: Federal immigration authorities have been undermining social movements in violation of the #FirstAmendment for a long time, and it's gotten worse under this administration. What's happening with the #PortlandProtests is just the latest example.
The first targeted under this administration? Immigrant rights leaders. ICE began openly picking off activists for deportation within the first year of the Trump Administration. npr.org/2018/03/16/591…
Importantly, ICE wasn't just targeting individual activists-it was targeting the movements they represent. Consider ICE's operation against Ravi Ragbir & Jean Montrevil, leaders of @NewSanctuaryNYC, organizing faith communities to advance immigrant rights. theintercept.com/2018/01/19/ice…

Today is Ousman's 1,000th day in immigration jail. His case is an example of everything that is wrong about the deportation machine. #FreeOusman (thread)
Ousman was arrested on July 31, 2017 in a home raid. ICE is the only law enforcement agency in the US that thinks it can go to a family's home without a judicial warrant and slap them in cuffs. It's unconstitutional. immigrantdefenseproject.org/ice-home-and-c…
Five days after his arrest, Ousman's partner found out she was pregnant. ICE was detaining Ousman in its discretion-meaning even they agreed they had the power to let him go. ICE refused. His daughter is now 2 and has never known her father outside of an immigration jail.

THREAD: For #immigration jails, NJ is the center of the #COVID19 epidemic. We’re knee-deep in lawsuits to get our people out. ICE and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in NY and NJ are fighting to keep our people locked up - even as the virus rapidly spreads. Some observations:
First, there’s NO QUESTION that #COVID19 is in immigration jails. As of last night (3/30) ICE itself is confirming 9 cases (4 people confined and 5 personnel) in immigration jails already (6 total in NJ jails alone). And that’s only the confirmed cases. ice.gov/coronavirus
There are many more unconfirmed. It takes A LOT for ICE to actually get someone tested. “Gabriel” begged for medical care. It wasn’t until after he literally FELL DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS before ICE took him to a hospital where he tested positive. buzzfeednews.com/article/hameda…

BREAKING: We’ve sued ICE to stop the unconstitutional detention & deportation of activist #ClaudioRojas following the debut of “The Infiltrators” @sundancefest, which depicts Claudio’s immigrant rights organizing.
Press release: dreamactivist.org/campaigns/fede…
THREAD
You’ve probably heard about Claudio’s courageous activism. In 2012, Claudio, a father of two, was detained in Broward Transitional Center. He organized with activists from the inside, as described in @ThisAmerLife & @thenation:
thisamericanlife.org/498/the-one-th… &
thenation.com/article/dreame…
Immigrant rights activists then successfully advocated for Claudio’s release. He returned to his wife and sons, with the permission of ICE, who in 2012 granted him an order of supervision that authorized him to live and work in the U.S.
