.@YvetteCooperMP points out that despite South African variant being identified 4 weeks ago, people can still fly into the UK from SA via places like Dubai or Istanbul, with no test, no checks and travel around country

PM says 'balanced approach needed for border policy' - what?
Johnson says he will look into this issue

Seems like the UK government hasn't realised that people can get connections from different locations
.@YvetteCooperMP also asking about worrying new Brazilian variant, which government knows about for three days, but says there are still direct flights coming from Brazil to UK

Johnson says 'gov is taking steps' on this but won't say there is a travel ban, because there isn't
Honestly this is painful to watch - Prime Minister being pulverised by Cooper here

'You keep saying you are taking measures, why can't you say what they actually are'
Johnson looking beaten, getting a bit ratty, has no answers to this grilling
This was at this afternoon's liaison committee, well worth a watch back if you can

Few better at this kind of scrutiny than @YvetteCooperMP

Hearing from some doctors and NHS staff who are deeply concerned about the current situation in hospitals but suggest they aren’t being allowed to speak out about it

Quite a bit of frustration as they think people should know about how serious the situation is
One tells me: ‘There is less focus on the disease this time, there is less understanding and support from the country - it seems like people have got bored of the virus’
They say that In Liverpool, both the numbers of patients testing positive for Coronavirus and hospital admissions are rising, with 6 wards on the Royal site now being used for patients with COVID-19. There is a similar situation on the Aintree site

Doesn't feel like the best time with everything going on but going to be off work for a week as me and the other half are buying and moving into our first house

Going to try and switch off but will probably still be updating/ranting a bit on twitter (can't resist)

Thanks all!
My tremendous colleagues at @LivEchonews will be with you for all the information you need in the coming days, with announcements expected once again for our region
Appreciate the kind words about our coverage from many people, helps keep us going!

The locating of thousands more misplaced test results have pushed Liverpool’s infection rate to over 400 per 100,000 - a staggering and really scary number for a city with some of the worst historic health issues that make fighting this virus so much harder
To anyone still trying to claim this virus isn’t real, listen to the doctors in the city who are already seeing covid wards fill up and are presenting for much worse - remember how many people here died in the spring and have a long, important word with yourself
If you refuse to do the right thing, you could easily pass this disease to someone with COPD or heart disease (we have unusually high levels of both here) and they will find it much harder to beat the virus

It's terrible to see local businesses taking decisions to close because of the new restrictions

The answer isn't to have no action at all, because the region's infection rates are dangerously out of control

The answer is for instant, proper funding support from government
Obviously the real answer is to have a fully operational, efficient test and trace system, but apparently after 7 months that was too much to ask for from this government
The Royal Liverpool Hospital's covid beds are two thirds full, ICU is 50% full - letting the virus run through our communities unchecked is simply not the answer here

It’s been a slog of a week, but it could be worse

I could be sending out press releases about a bowel-movement based dating app called Cheek2Cheek

I *shit* you not Image
'Will allow users to upload specifics about their bowel movements, bathroom habits and specifics in regards to their butt/gut health'

Great
Guess they are hoping it can trump Tinder

There seems to be a lack of awareness of our region's admittedly convoluted municipal and geographic set-up, so hope this helps:

Liverpool City Region = Merseyside + Halton

Merseyside = Liverpool, Wirral, Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton (yes that includes Southport)
All of the areas listed above have the new restrictions, as does Warrington
Steve Rotheram is the city region Mayor for the whole region (all of Merseyside and Halton)

Joe Anderson is the Mayor for the city of Liverpool alone
