North Carolina party registration changes over past week

Rep -> something else
3,007

Dem -> something else
667

Most of these changes are to Unaffiliated

Rep -> Unaffiliated
2,650

Dem -> Unaffiliated
484
These statewide changes appear to confirm anecdotes of persons changing their party registration newsweek.com/swing-states-r…
Hard to gauge the significance of these party registration changes. On one hand, they're a small proportion of the 8.2 million NC registered voters. On the other, changing party registration is not a common thing, so they may represent stronger undercurrents
Furthermore, list-maintenance has picked up following the election, and registration cancellations are falling more heavily on registered Democrats. Purges in last week:

Republican: 8,962
Democrat: 18,728

I want to stress this is likely routine activity, not nefarious
So, at this point in time in NC, it is true more Republicans than Democrats are changing their party registration, but it is a relatively small amount. We'll want to watch cumulative effects, particularly as people update their registrations while visiting motor vehicle offices
Pennsylvania party voter registration changes in week 1/11 to 1/18

Rep -> Dem 1,198
Dem -> Rep 482

Like NC numbers (see thread), there appears to be something going on, but it is relatively small to the 8.9 million registered voters in PA dos.pa.gov/VotingElection…
(More) Pennsylvania party voter registration changes in week 1/11 to 1/18 (see the thread for more info)

Rep -> Other 2,055
Dem -> Other 350

Adding party switches

Rep -> Something else 3,253
Dem -> Something else 832
NC Party registration changes in the prior week continue to see more Republicans changing their registration. Most are to unaffiliated status

Dem -> something else 631
Rep -> something else 2,850

Dem -> Unaffiliated 440
Rep -> Unaffiliated 2,505
Past two weeks of NC party registration changes

Dem -> something else 1,298
Rep -> something else 5,857

Dem -> Unaffiliated 924
Rep -> Unaffiliated 5,155
It does seem like something is happening, perhaps in response to the attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. We'll get new weekly PA data soon, and a number of state monthly reports next week, that may provide a more complete picture
PA party registration changes in the past week continue the trend of more Republican switching their party registration

Dem -> Something else 656
Rep -> Something else 2,535

Most are not fully changing party

Dem -> other 241
Rep -> other 1,720
PA year-to-date party registration changes

Dem -> Something else 3,277
Rep -> Something else 9,891

Most are not fully changing party

Dem -> other 1,184
Rep -> other 6,415
Changing party registration is not a typical behavior. There are likely undercurrents present that we cannot observe with these data. We should get more states' data next week when states provide monthly reports
But also, these changes are small relative to the 8.9 million registered voters in PA. For this phenomenon to have an impact, we'd need to see sustained changes over months

There really is a simple answer to this problem: don’t invite liars on to your programs. Republicans are now in the minority. There is no news value of having them on to spout and mainstream conspiracy theories
Join us again next week for another episode of outrage theater
I think the media is broken. And that is it. There is no both sides about the election outcome. Inviting guests on to shows to spout conspiracy theories has downstream effects that are destroying peoples' lives, all for a few more clicks and eyeballs

More anecdotal reports that following last week, registered Republicans are changing their registration to something else sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/…
Reports of registered Republicans abandoning their party newsweek.com/swing-states-r…
If these reports turn out to be true and substantial, the downstream effect of disgusted persons abandoning the Republican Party will be elected Republicans will feel more primary election pressure from extreme elements of their voters. This won't necessarily help moderation

If Trump was rational he’d resign and let Pence pardon him before what now appears to be an impeachment conviction in the Senate

“If” is doing a lot of work here
Perhaps Trump would rather House members pass his loyalty test first. He is actively ripping apart his own party and he and they are fine with it
On the next episode of Gorilla TV...

Breaking news: the Trump campaign has voluntarily withdrawn a challenge in Georgia state court to the presidential election (Trump v Raffensperger). I was scheduled to testify tomorrow for intervenors in support of the state defendants
I have been involved in several successful election lawsuits against the GA Secretary of State's office. It felt odd to be testifying in defense of them, and for them to welcome my assistance. Trump has a way of bringing people together :)
Not sure if @marceelias gets to count this one. I don't think the judge had yet ruled if they would be allowed to intervene

#earlyvote update 12/28

2,126,254 people have voted in the 2021 Georgia Senate run-off election
electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-202…
We have a week and a day to go. What seems likely at this point is fewer people will vote early than in the general, which is expected since run-off elections tend to have lower turnout and there were three fewer days of in-person early voting with the holidays
What does this mean for Election Day voters? If the three fewer in-person days affected early turnout, perhaps Election Day will be a greater share of the overall electorate. 1) the ratio of early to Election Day is off plus 2) some people who might vote early vote Election Day

#earlyvote update 12/16

715,048 people have voted in the 2021 Georgia Senate run-off election electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-202…
Georgia does not have party registration. Next best to watch is the racial profile of the electorate. Still a long way to go...

2020 General (final)
White: 56.4%
Black: 27.7%

2021 Senate Run-off (current)
White: 54.5% (-1.9 points)
Black: 33.1% (+4.4)
I am reluctant to make same day prior to the election comparisons. If you recall, for the first three days of in-person early voting during the general Georgia had a problem with their electronic poll books. In some places it took up to 15 minutes to check in a single voter.
