Re: the claim that the senate cannot convict Trump once he is no longer President, this is incorrect. Removal is only one consequence of conviction. The other is being barred from ever holding office again. ⁦@steve_vladeck⁩ explains:

Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution states: “Judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States” This is why Trump MUST be convicted.

Convicting Trump is a necessity not only because it bars him from ever seeking public office again, but also because it denies him the benefits that previous presidents otherwise receive, including a generous annual stipend, funds for offices and a staff, and a pension.

It is also a necessity because it demonstrates that there are actual consequences for inciting terrorist insurrection against the U.S; committing endless crimes; engaging in treason; and being so derelict in his role that nearly 400K Americans died from a virus he denied was real

Convicting Trump isn’t about politics or retribution; nor simply about removing him, nor even just making sure he cannot hold office again. It is about showing the nation and world that no one is above the law and there will never be unity without accountability.
