1. #Covid
I saw the sun come up this morning. And I saw the green of the trees through the window to the side of this building. I actually saw them today. And I just stared. It’s a beautiful time of day. The light bounces off the earth beautifully.
2. #Covid
I’m not a morning person generally and so most mornings I would have missed this. I’m that person who can keep you up at night..But sleep through a morning.
Here it’s the trolley that wakes you first. Around 3AM. It’s distinctive beeping is merely to announce
3. #Covid
It’s arrival. Good morning is the next word you will hear. And your hand goes out instinctively. Blood pressure and temperature vitals. A quick look over to see that you’re fine and they are at the next bed. Why am I thinking that this is just not like
3. #Covid
The ice cream truck sound. How did I get there. At around five it’s blood tests. These are important. It’s what the doc looks for for consistency. The other vitals are important .. but I’ve learnt that consistency comes from here.
4. #Covid
And that’s when your coffee gets snuck in as well. Turn around and it’s there. No need for asking. Like clockwork it’s just there. And a rusk. I know the drill now. It’s up at 3. Short sleeping intervals from there but it’s up at 3.
5. #Covid
So..hey..I might just be a morning person now through no fault of my own.
The new drips and other medication come in at about 6. And there is always a decision to up or lower the oxygen levels. I’ve been on two litres a day..or just more. Others here have
6. #Covid
Been on 10. And that valve keeps just going up. It’s not a good thing. It should be lower.
7. #Covid
All my colleagues are up this morning. And might I say it myself .. looking much better. We are all here still. We greet in the mornings. And exchange wisdoms. We are laughing this morning. It’s just different. Even though bed no 2 is still struggling somewhat. Coughing
8. #Covid
But we can all see the improvement. And he knows it too. It took him to the brink for 3 days..but here he is today. Giving the nurses hell. That’s just him. And they know him.
To see him grumpy and upright is actually a pleasure though. For the last three days
9. #Covid
He has been just sitting there in his bed. Rocking gently backwards and forwards. And almost falling over at times. Until his hallucinations stop snd he is back with us. Grumpy is good.
10. #Covid
Do you want to know the distinctive sound here.. Ward A just like all the other wards:
Can you guess:
....... coughing.
Different types. Deep. Superficial. General....
it’s endless. It’s continuous and it’s there. You struggle with hearing it in
11. #Covid
The beginning. It’s annoying and then it’s just there. Nothing you can do about it.
12. #Covid
A nurse pops in her head here at the door. Goodbye she says. Her shift is over or about to end. Night shift. She won’t see us again. It’s seven on and seven off here. And that’s it for her now. We thank her. And she knows that in 7 days time four very
13. #Covid
Different individuals will be lying here.Remember:it’s Sunday. And I’m going home today.Unofficially.Just waiting for the doctor to say it’s time. And it will be awesome. But sad at the same time.I want so much for us all to walk out of here together.Comrades.Victorious
14. #Covid
.. but we won’t. We can’t. It’s been our own journey. And each will leave when they are ready. We know this. And that’s a good thing to. We are healing but differently.
15. #Covid
I’m staring outside through the window again. The blue sky touching the top of the trees. And the light bouncing through the leaves. But there is a different sound to. It’s of a city coming to life. I hear a car. A motorbike. Traffic. Faintly. It’s good.
16. #Covid
I want to hear them. I know they are outside. And I want to be part of that for a second. Because it says there is life out there. Life.

1. It’s day four. #Covid.
I’ve lost count of which day it is. Saturday. Yes. My fingers count visually with me. Yes .. Saturday.
Yesterday the #loadshedding started at 20h00. I was asleep when the generator went off and the power came back. Today I know it went off again at 12.
2. Because I did look at my phone. It’s not scary in the day. And this time the generator seemed to come on seamlessly. The noise it makes is actually now a relief. It’s working.
And the nurses are in their stride.
3. It’s the weekend shift for them. There are new faces. Abigail. Cebo with a cow drawn in pen on her gown. And Nozi.
Same energy. Same friendly smiles. Same spirit.

#Loadshedding: #Covid
1. The nurses are making the beds. And we are sitting in chairs. The mood is jovial. We have been keeping each other’s spirits up.Someone is taking orders for coffee. The lights are on.
And then it’s just dark.Pitch black.Everything goes off.And we sit there
#Loadshedding #Covid
2. A nurse rushes in. Cellphone in hand - torched. She is heading for the 3rd bed. His oxygen system is not lined to the new power supply that will kick in. Other nurses rush in. They grab their phones. And it’s dark. We’re still just sitting there..
#Loadshedding #Covid
3. They don’t panic. And I’m wondering why. But I can see that this drill has been done 100 times. They know what they are doing. Some nurses in the passages ensure everybody is accounted for. Escorted to their rooms. From my seat I’m counting the seconds..
