Thread:

Single performances winning you tests are rare, and as a batsmen nearly impossible as a team need 20 wkts to win. So the argument that a player performs in 'wins' is not a good enough to judge someone's ability in any way. Those performances have turned out to be winning
contributions because others have stepped up. Wins only make those performances memorable. On the other hand, what carries more weight regarding an individual ability is the performance(s) that come in a loss, because they truly show where you stand apart from your peers in terms
of skills & character. Tendulkar & Kohli are often brought down by the logic, 'ohh they have performed in losses & are not match winners or are selfish'. Anyone saying this couldn't be more wrong since those performances showed everyone else why they were better than the rest.
On the other hand, Laxman, Dravid, Pujara, Rahane are often spoken/labelled better than Sachin/Kohli because their performances came in wins. What people sometimes forget that for Dravid's 233, there was Agarkar's 6/42, for Pujara's 100 at MCG 2018, there was a Bumrah 6-fer too
For Rahane's hundred at Lords', there were Bhuvi's 6-fer & Ishant's 7-fer as well. For Rahane's twin centuries in Delhi (2015), there were Ashwin & Jadeja who bowled India to a win on a lifeless pitch as well. For Laxman's 96 in Durban, Bhajji took 4-10 as well. When Kohli scored
153 in Centurion or 149 in Edgbaston, no one scored a 50 in the innings. Similarly, Sachin scored his 50th test 100 when India were 400 runs behind. He scored a 100 when Dale Steyn took 7-51 in 1st inns in Nagpur. In the same series, when India won in Kolkata, Sachin, Viru, VVS,
MS all scored 100s & Bhajji/Ishant bowled India to victory. This is not to say that the players mentioned here apart from Sachin/Kohli weren't good enough. They were probably the best possible support possible. But there's a reason why some of Kohli's/Sachin's best performances
were in a loss. Both of them were good enough to rise to the occasion regularly when others around them failed. To say they performed in losses is incorrect, what would be appropriate to say is, they performed despite the team losing. When a team is losing, it's easier for
shoulders to drop & give up easily. It's take special character to then rise up to the occasion. When the team is doing well, the energy rubs off to others and everyone sort is able to do better. Hence, the argument the team wins when a player performs well isn't the best defence
of any player. If anything, it should be said that the player needs to perform a lot more so that the team wins consistently.

So many things wrong in this tweet that I can't even...

1. It's NOT a turning track.
2. Sweep with conviction & be aggresive are two different statements which could easily be mutually exclusives.
3 Field was already spread.

Will explain the 2nd point in the thread below

+ Image
Cook played the sweep with conviction in 2012 but he wasn't overly aggressive while facing Indian spinners. Plus, sweep is a special shot which not every batsman can play. Pietersen was aggresive in Mumbai but he didn't play the sweep much because the pitch had extra bounce.
+
Pujara & Mayank are pretty aggresive when it comes to playing spin, but they rely on using their feet. Pujara does it to play along the ground, while Mayank goes aerial. Same for Rohit, out of these 3, only Mayank rarely plays the sweep. In fact, in the current top 6, only Pant

Think adjusting for OS spinners in Asia on their first tour is very similar to how Asian pacers adjust outside Asia. Mostly, the first tour is a struggle regardless of quality because they are not able to judge the right kind of line & length to bowl. Sharing the numbers for Lyon
Swann & Panesar to add some weight to what I want to say.

Swann avged 39.5 & took 8 wkts at a SR of 75.3 in his first tour to Ind (& Asia) (08-09). In 2012, he avged 24.75 & took 20 wkts at . Massive improvement which was also due to one tour each in BAN, UAE & SL.
Panesar took 5 wkts from 6 inns at an avg of 62.4 & SR of 141 in his first tour to IND (2006). In 2008/09, he avged 50.5 & took a wkt every 101 deliveries for his 6 wkts. Those numbers came down to 26.82 (avg) & 64.5 (SR) with him taking 17 wkts. Again, constant improvement.

There's a reason why it's called 'PooPindia'. I mean one could easily write an article, make an arguable case for Virat being a better cricketer. The numbers are there for the article to be a good one. But when you're obsessed with tagging your countrymen, this is the best effort
There's a reason why I said this. There is hardly any data to even say who voted for who. Any Indian could have also voted for ABD, and I am sure there would have been some. What would that make them, pro SA? This one publication can only & only label
Indians in the name of nationalism. How sick your definition of nationalism could be when you label your own countrymen everyday. Pathetic & disgusting.

Thank you @cricvidya team for inviting me. It was a pleasure to talk about the SCG test & discuss the issues around it. Posting the clip where I speak about the issue of racism & how we all must collectively work towards eradicating it by some individual steps by being more aware
of what we say. We must take a leaf out of @Eoin16's book & appreciate diversity and embrace it fully like he did when he spoke of @englandcricket's success in #CWC19 & how diversity was a pillar for it. (2)
Lastly, we must look within ourselves and call out the racism at home first (have spoken of Hardik Pandya & the jokes he keeps receiving on his skin colour) while we are standing with our people who are being subject to racism abroad. We shouldn't be selective in anyway and

Mostly I am never in favour of an unfit player or a less than 100% player to be play a game. But considering how this tour has gone by, don't think anyone is 100% fit. Considering India will be okay with Bumrah in India, I feel the call to play him should be left with him only.
If he feels to confident to take the load and is 60-70% percent fit, think the Team Management should back him. But this is such a tough call really. The team has done all the hard work to reach here despite all the injuries and whatever call they take, they will face criticism
If Bumrah plays and aggravates his injury, which will also mean that India don't win, the criticism will be huge, and T20 fanatics will lose it too. But if he doesn't play and lose by a fan margin, the questions will still be asked that should the team have risked playing him?

You can, because 3 bowlers carrying an attack makes other even more injury prone. Not only that, but the potency is lost as well.

Lords 2011- Zaheer out, Harbhajan, Ishant & Praveen Kumar had to bowl in both innings the majority of the overs.
Bhajji got ruled out after the 2nd Test. Ishant got ruled out for the last one which meant that an unfit RP was bowling at the oval. Similarly Ishant got injured again in Lords 2014 after his 7 fer & a part of that was him bowling a lot of overs because Binny wasn't good enough
to be a 5th bowler that day. In fact, I'd even say this that a lot of tests IND couldn't even overseas was because they didn't have a 5th bowler. Wellington 2014, Joburg 2013, Cape Town 2011 are the most recent examples that come to mind. A 5th bowler isn't just necessary to keep
