Cook played the sweep with conviction in 2012 but he wasn't overly aggressive while facing Indian spinners. Plus, sweep is a special shot which not every batsman can play. Pietersen was aggresive in Mumbai but he didn't play the sweep much because the pitch had extra bounce.

Pujara & Mayank are pretty aggresive when it comes to playing spin, but they rely on using their feet. Pujara does it to play along the ground, while Mayank goes aerial. Same for Rohit, out of these 3, only Mayank rarely plays the sweep. In fact, in the current top 6, only Pant

plays the sweep regularly. Sweep isn't an all weather shot that can be played easily when you want. We saw what happened to SL batsmen when they attempted it. Plus it can be extremely dangerous if played on pitches which have bounce (ask Rahane).

IND batsmen will do well to back their strengths and play the way they feel best. English & Aussie batsmen have been culturally good at playing the sweep because they didn't use to pick the spin from the hand earlier. Batsmen in IND from an early age are taught that & hence

they are more comfortable in coming down the track than playing the spin. Even when IND struggled against Ajantha Mendis in 2008-09, hardly any batsman got out playing the sweep because they didn't attempt it and tried to read him from the hand and couldn't.
