495,000 L.A. households are at risk of eviction, according to UCLA’s @ChallengeIneq. Not a typo.

Inequality before the pandemic created a national housing crisis. Without protections from lawmakers it’s poised to explode.

This is what that will look like.
President-Elect Biden has called for an extension of the federal eviction moratorium and increased rental assistance and funding for unhoused Americans. cnbc.com/2021/01/14/bid…
Here in Los Angeles throughout the pandemic @LATenantsUnion, @KtownforAll and others have protested evictions like the ones we saw — what law enforcement calls “pre-COVID” evictions — calling on city and county officials to issue stronger protections. latimes.com/california/sto…
This summer, we spent time with some of those activists, including @theglowingstars and @digitalurn, to learn more about how they see a direct connection between the housing fight and calls to defund the police. nbcnews.com/video/grassroo…
What happens after evictions? Homelessness, for many, which is a massive crisis of its own as we have documented for years. Here’s a report on the crisis from fall 2019, when Trump proposed rounding up unhoused residents.

I'm often asked if there will be a criminal investigation of Trump officials for his family separation policy.

This new DOJ IG report could be a road map for the Biden administration to do just that.

Thanks @AliciaMenendez for having me on.
More on that report. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
Many who have dealt with the fallout of separations say @RodRosenstein’s apology is far too little, far too late, particularly for kids who are traumatized for life as a result of the policy and in light of the DOJ IG report making clear he was involved in its implementation.

BREAKING: Department of Justice officials respond to new Inspector General report, which says DOJ was "driving force" behind family separations, by blaming Trump, expressing regret.

With @JuliaEAinsley. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
A former DOJ official tells us "the most important thing from this is the very deep premeditation and intentionality for the entire family separation effort regardless of known harm that would come to parents and children... cruelty was the intent." nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
Important: this report could provide a road map for the incoming Biden administration to investigate those responsible for the policy President-elect Joe Biden called "criminal" to @kwelkernbc and told @GeoffRBennett his DOJ will investigate. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…

NEW: Lawyers say they still have not reached parents of 611 kids separated by Trump, per tonight's court filing. That number breaks down this way:

➡️ Parents of 392 were deported
➡️ Parents of 201 are likely in U.S.
➡️ Trump admin has no contact info for parents of 18 kids
Last month, that number was 628. Incoming Biden-Harris admin has said these reunifications will be a top priority of a yet-to-be-named family separation task force. Whether or not all families will be reunited in the United States is TBD. They haven't said.
The total number of separations by the Trump administration is over 5,000 according to the ACLU.

These boxes of homemade thumbprint cookies and mandel bread just arrived from octogenarian @MSNBC viewer Elaine in Atlanta, just in time for me to eat them all while watching our #GASen coverage tonight. Thank you Elaine!
Oops. They actually arrived at the NBC News L.A. bureau on November 5. But I think I still have to try them. Sorry I'm not eating them fresh, Elaine.
Just spoke with Elaine, who already dropped off her ballot and is pulling for a Democratic sweep. I apologized for letting the cookies go stale.

NEW: Doctors say the Trump administration irreversibly traumatized thousands of families separated at the border. Hundreds are still unreachable. We went inside @SenecaTPMF’s effort to track them down and offer mental health services for @NBCNightlyNews.
This search would have started far sooner had the White House not killed a settlement agreement to fund @SenecaFOA's efforts, as we exclusively reported. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
To learn more about Seneca's search for the families, and the challenges they face, read this great report from @brittny_mejia. latimes.com/california/sto…
