Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the great figures of American history. He was a bold and fearless leader in America’s Civil Rights Movement, and he was a courageous champion of inalienable rights for all Americans. #MLKDay2021
Dr. King also understood that these inalienable rights were etched into the very core of the American idea. He knew that his work was not to establish a new truth, but to extend the application of this undeniable truth to all U.S. citizens, regardless of race or color. #MLKDay
Dr. King reminds us in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” that those fighting for Civil Rights were not fighting against America; instead, they were “in reality standing up for the best in the American Dream.” #MLKDay2021
It was this spirit that drove Dr. King’s passionate belief that America is not an irredeemable nation, stained by its sins, but instead it is a promise of hope, prosperity, and liberty. #MLKDay

Four years ago, @POTUS asked me to undertake what has been the experience of a lifetime – the opportunity to serve as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Both President Trump and I shared a new vision for @HUDgov, one which was one built on measuring success not by how many people we added on to government assistance, but how many people we were able to lift up, off government assistance and onto the path of self-sufficiency.
The governing philosophy, which guided all of our work at @HUDgov, is simple: freedom works better than regulation; self-sufficiency is superior to dependence; and liberty is most achievable when it is derived of the people, by the people, for the people.
President @realDonaldTrump and I agree that the best run communities are the ones run locally. Today, we are tearing down the Obama Administration's Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule, which was an overreach of unelected Washington bureaucrats into local communities.
The AFFH rule was a ruse for social engineering under the guise of desegregation, essentially turning @HUDgov into a national zoning board.
Furthermore, the funding subject to the AFFH rule has been misused and abused for decades as slush funds for pet projects and causes ranging from an entertainment venue to a splash park and Planned Parenthood funding.
George Floyd was a man of faith, a man of color, & a father to the young men in his community & church. My heart breaks for his family & for our country being torn apart by violence. Honor the legacy of Floyd by protesting in peace. There will be justice for him & his family.
“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.” We are one American family united by liberty & justice for all. Justice will be served where our laws were broken & civil liberties violated.
We must hold our elected officials accountable, we must pray for peace, and we must demand justice, but it cannot be at the expense of our communities or people’s lives, protestor or officer.
Every day, @HUDgov programs provide opportunities that uplift our fellow Americans and put them on the path to self-sufficiency. In our proposed FY21 budget, meet the people we serve and learn how we will continue making a difference. #HumansOfHUDhud.gov/press/press_re…
Charles never had a place of his own and lacked stability most of his life. After being approved for a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, he can now provide his two boys with the stable life he never had. #HumansOfHUD
Kristy was a public housing resident who wanted to end the cycle of dependency in her family. She enrolled herself in the Family Self-Sufficiency program. After working with a financial coach, Kristy is now a homeowner. #HumansOfHUD
A thread on regulatory barriers to affordable housing:
Expert research indicates that more than 25% of the cost of a new home is the direct result of Federal, State, and local regulations – and sometimes the price tag is much higher than that: up to 42% for some new multifamily construction.
For this reason, in recent years, new construction is lagging. Census Bureau data shows us that from 2010 to 2016, only seven homes were built for every 10 households formed.
