19th Jan’90 is a dark day in the history of Kashmir when 500k Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee their native land due to proliferation of an extremist ideology. Terror unleashed compelled them to abandon their properties & just flee the valley for their life #KashmiriHindus
Pandits were mercilessly eliminated as a result of a Pakistani sponsored religious zeal & fanaticism that had unfortunately indoctrinated some minds in the valley. Kashmiri Hindus were again at the receiving end of this bigoted ideology making their exodus the 7th time in history
Some of the killed were engineers, some lawyers, some teachers & some simply a grocer. A heart wrenching story is that of Girija Tikoo, a lab assistant at a govt. school in Kashmir, who was brutally gang-raped, horribly tortured and cut into two halves while she was alive!
One can draw parallels to what happened in 1990 with Kashmiri Hindus with that of 1947 Mirpur massacre when Hindus & Sikhs were killed by Pakistani tribesmen & soldiers, when women jumped in the cold Jhelum river with their young children to escape abduction & rape!
This day is also a reminder that Kashmiri Pandits in-spite of facing such brutalities have re-started & contributed positively to society. For their safe return to the valley, Pakistan’s constant attempts to fuel “othering” ideology for their selfish interest has to be eliminated
