It is a provable fact that Fox News disinformation was a major contributing factor to the insurrection of Jan 6.
Congress should immediately draft legislation holding media companies responsible for deliberate lies.
This is probably their last chance to do so with a D majority.
A Truth Matters act could force companies like Fox News to retract misinformation in a meaningful way - or else lose their broadcast license.
This would *not* be like the Fairness Doctrine.
For example it wouldn't require Maddow to spend half her time promoting R politics.
A Truth Matters act would be simply about promoting truth and refuting lies.
Lies should not be piped into tens of millions of homes.
Most Americans are not equipped to filter it.
When networks like Fox tell lies, equal time and resources must be spent refuting the lies.
If Sean Hannity spends 47 minutes telling provable lies about specific officials, it would have to be Sean Hannity taking 47 minutes to correct the lies during the same time slot.
If Martha Maccallum and Bret Baier allow Kayleigh to lie about the election for 15 minutes, then Martha and Bret must spend 15 minutes correcting the lie.
Or else Fox loses their broadcasting license and forfeits all contracts with streaming and cable companies. #TruthMattersAct

Fox has stoked racism and other divisions. Fox tells its viewers that Democrats are their enemies. Fox lied about the coronavirus. And without Fox News, Trump would have been removed from office long ago.
Without Fox News (and Newsmax, OAN, etc), a large majority of the country would have been horrified that 120+ Republicans tried to overturn a fair election.
But instead all of Fox's audience is laser-focused on Hunter Biden's finances.
Here's a video clip from the protest outside Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's house in Detroit tonight.
I swiped the video off one of the protestor's Facebook posts. They're yelling, "Stop the Steal!" into megaphones and calling her a felon(?) They're clearly living in an alternate reality.
"She's a Democrat. She's a Dem-o-Rat. She's decided to completely ignore all the credible, credible, fraudulent evidence that's been continually presented and pointed out!"
Everything about Trump's rally tonight was an awful assault on the United States.
Does it ever feel to you like a physical punch to the gut?
The worst of it is that Republicans don't care and will do nothing more than calculate how Trump's rally affects their chances of controlling the senate.
I was always taught - in school and at home - to revere our Constitution. Seeing it trashed by the highest office holder is devastating.
