It is interesting to note that in words such as पिहितम् , पिपीलकः , पिनद्धम् and पिप्लुः , the उपसर्गः is अपि.

Eg. पिहित = अपि + √धा + क्त

Both अपिहितम् and पिहितम् are correct forms and mean the same. We are seeing अकारलोपः in पिहितम् ।

How's that? Read and find out.
It seems there does not exist a sutra in Ashtadhyayi regarding this अकारलोपः ।

However, this rule is indicated in न्यासः and पदमञ्जरी of काशिका-वृत्तिः । It seems आचार्य भागुरि (before Maharshi Panini), who does not find mention even in महाभाष्यम्, has laid down this rule.
You can read न्यासः and पदमञ्जरी for the sutra 6.2.37 to find out more about it.

जयमङ्गल has mentioned the below shloka in commentary for भट्टिकाव्य.

अपिशब्दादकारलोपस्तु -
"वष्टि भागुरिरल्लोपमवाप्योरुपसर्गयोः ।
धाञ् कृञोस्तनिनह्योश्च बहुलत्वेन शौनकिः ॥ इति ।"
Even in Siddhanta Kaumudi we find a shloka,

"
'वष्टि भागुरिरल्लोपमवाप्योरुपसर्गयोः ।
आपं चैव हलन्तानां यथा वाचा निशा दिशा ॥'
वगाहः-अवगाहः । पिधानम्-अपिधानम् ॥"
Quoting directly from article (given below)

Here is a collection of 38 phrases of natural expression in संस्कृतम् used by कालिदास in his famous drama अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम् ।

I was surprised to observe the similarity of expressions used even in today's parlance.

Add these to your Sanskrit vocabulary and speak Kālidāsa.
1) Phrase = हला प्रियंवदे
Rough translation = हे प्रियंवदा

Example usage =

अनसूया- हला प्रियंवदे, यद्यपि गान्धर्वेण विधिना निर्वृत्तकल्याणा
शकुन्तला ऽनुरूपभर्तृगामिनी संवृत्तेति विर्वृतं मे हृदयं, तथाप्येतावत्
चिन्तनीयम् ।
2) यथाहं पश्यामि
जैसे मैं समझती हूँ
As I understand
As I see

अनसूया- यथाहं पश्यामि तथा तस्यानुमतं भवेत् ।
