How do you work from home when your job is to care for a #heritage building? Our Conservator Jonathan has taken on a new lockdown project: to recreate the Quire carvings of #GrinlingGibbons.

See how he got on 👇 #thread
Just like for Sir Christopher Wren, Jonathan's project starts on the drawing board, using the records in our archive and the Quire itself to ensure his recreated model followed the original designs.
His design, in the style of Gibbons, begins with an acanthus leaf pattern which is shaped using a fret saw to remove the waste lime wood.
He uses gouges to rough out the pattern and add depth and dimension. Cutting away as much waste wood as possible, both on the front and back, replicates the light touch of Gibbons.
Some hours later...you can see the carving of the four key stages from the layout to finishing. Gibbons used the ends of reeds to sand his work and create the smooth refined surfaces he is famed for.
Pretty good for a first attempt we think!

Jonathan will be talking about his experiences of recreating a section of the Quire panel during Craft Week in May. Stay tuned for more info! In the meantime, learn more about his lockdown project here: stpauls.co.uk/gibbons-carving

Today we remember St Francis of Assisi, patron of animals.
So why not come with us on a St Paul's Safari to mark #WorldAnimalDay.

Let’s start close to home with the humble bumble. Where would we bee without these little guys’ hard work?
Geese are a pretty common sight on UK shores, although these ones might want to watch their backs from a scary looking predator!!
