Today for the 1st time ever heard a German pro-#prostitution activist (self-identified "hobbyist dominatrix") mention the New Zealand model and saying we should adopt it because it eliminates human trafficking. No, it only eliminates human trafficking convictions. Big difference.
German's rates of convicting pimps are already continuously decreasing since we introduced our own highly deregulated liberalized model back in 2002. We went from 151 convictions in 2000 to 32 in 2011. Bureau of Criminal Investigations says convictions decreased, rates did not.
Meanwhile, New Zealand was doing the following to make it appear as though it didn't have human trafficking: They didn't have a law against domestic sex trafficking, which helped to ignore the fact that 1/3 of prostituted women were once commercially exploited girls. 
Both Germany & New Zealand were big on deporting women who in other countries would have been recognized as victims of trafficking, simply framing them as "illegal workers". Don't speak the language, don't know their rights - totally not exploitation, just "black market workers".
Geography helps New Zealand, too, as they can literally stop migrant women from entering the country. They are stopping women from getting on flights cause they suspect they will be prostituted in their country. Germany couldn't practice that if it tried. We're not sea locked.
New Zealand is still being shamefully neglectful of recognizing that most human trafficking victims are female and sexual violence and exploitation are frequently involved right now in 2021. Role model for what exactly? A+ for abandoning women and girls. stuff.co.nz/national/crime…
Anecdotal but significant: Just 1 women's refuge in New Zealand reported 130 women in 1 year turning to them because their violent partners were pimping them out. That's domestic sex trafficking. But New Zealand still needs time in the 21st century to even wake up to the fact.
Germany is not much better, we just police our borders less. Pimps have spent a long time feeling very cozy here, too, though there is an occasional raid & arrest made. If you just rent an apartment somewhere, there isn't much to fear & it' apartment brothels that NZ loves dearly
Now in practice most of German prostitution happens in these apartment brothels with 1-4 women, too, but they technically require a license if it's more than 1 woman. New Zealand loves its provision of being completely utterly hands-off if the brothel is an apartment of 1-4 women
No one fully knows where they are, how many there are, who the people in them are, and if they are really "owner-operated" as the label says. Anyone could be running them. Organized crime runs them in Germany, why would they pull out if we adopt this model? Nothing to fear.
In essence: Germany and New Zealand are both failing women and girls miserably. If Germany adopted New Zealand's model, it'd be like applying a slightly stricter Berlin model to the entire country. But this model already failed us so why go back in time? berliner-zeitung.de/news/menschenh…
10 years ago Berlin which has some of the laxest prostitution laws was already being lambasted: tagesspiegel.de/berlin/mensche… Trafficking women into Berlin brothels is low risk and high reward. And they're currently trying to take police out of the picture completely. Yay, I guess.
