Usual Weekend/Monday ⚠️ reporting lag

⚰️⚰️⚰️ 1348 (28 day cut off) deaths.
Rolling 7 day average 1248 daily.

TOTAL deaths. 109,873 ⚰️💔⚰️💔⚰️💔
(ONS/stats authority to 8/1/21. 95,829
+
14,044 (28 day deaths by date of death)

An undercount due to reporting lag.
Here are the underlying death data from the Gov Covid website.

These will be a marked undercount as it normally takes 2-3 weeks for virtually all deaths to be notified. The closer to the current day the more will be added.

We will be past 111k already for sure.
We’ve 10 consecutive days over 1000 deaths a day by date of death from 10/1/21 -19/1/21. Most days over 1,100 deaths.

Only once in the first wave did we cried the 1k deaths (28 day measure) although there were several consecutive days when excess deaths exceeded that.
But bear in mind that we have treatments and protocols available now that reduce death in severe cases, and some recently that reduce hospitalisations.

That gives some idea of how severe this second wave really is.
🦠🦠🦠33,552 new cases.

BUT if you look at cases by specimen (swab) date - today’s report marked in blue, yesterday’s in yellow, you can see cases are still being added to last Sunday’s swabs.

The closer to the current day the more added

44,558 cases by swab date on Monday
This is relevant to 🏥 admissions which, although slowing are still horribly high at around 4K a day.

🛌 In patients. 37,899 on Thursday but likely 38,116 yesterday looking at the latest report from each Nation.
VENTILATOR 🛌 have finally passed the 4K mark. In fact over 100 increase on the previous day.

That is a large and worrying increase compared to the recent pattern of increase.
The usual ⚠️ about Sunday’s and Monday’s data to come.

Swabbing and Processing tends to fall.

Home test kits ordered on Friday tend not to be picked up until Monday (hence Monday cases by specimen date tending to be the high point in the week)

Death reporting lag longer.
Summary fro. @LawrenceGilder with 7 day rolling averages.

Again, 60 day deaths are 132 above 28 day deaths.

Another reason I am confident that we are already at 111,000 COVID deaths. (Likely markedly more)

💉 VACCINATION: 5,861,351 people have had at least one dose of vaccine
Of those 468,617 have had two doses.

We really should be seeing some comparative data on the efficacy of one dose v two from next week.

But a big well done to the vaccination teams and logistics for delivering this. 6.33 million doses in total.

👏👏👏👏
I do like these @LawrenceGilder graphs that show when the people reported as dead within 28 days of a Covid test actually died. (See the orange tip).

So a decent proportion of hospital deaths are reported within days, but quite a lot take several days and some weeks.
Non hospital deaths tend to lag longer.

Harrowing reality of a coronavirus ward - where exhausted medics fight to keep patients alive and some don't make it | UK News | Sky News

How can qualified scientists play this down.

In the morgue this time the corpses are a decade younger than in wave 1 news.sky.com/story/covid-19…
Excellent if sorrowful report from @JasonFarrellSky

The only correction I would make is we have already passed 110k Covid deaths (all from the Gov Covid website )

This was yesterday. A conservative measure. Today we passed 110k Covid deaths

It really hits home when you can see Tony Brown struggling to breath and talk, only to hear he died a couple of days later, leaving his widow, Linda grieving. He thinks he caught Covid at work delivering bread. Poor social distancing and poor mask wearing.

Encouraging to see Israel having declining hospitalisation rates.

Is this their vaccination programme taking effect, NPIs or both?
These are the most recent vaccination data

(Israel is following the Pfizer recommended dosing pattern and interval)

Remarkable to have double dosed so many already.
Israel population c9 million.

It will be interesting to see enriched data soon.

- 1st dose: 2.6M (+78K)
- 2nd dose: 1.1M (+141K)

Population vaccinated:
- 1st dose: 28.9% (+0.9)
- 2nd dose: 12.2% (+1.6)

The bill for Boris Johnson’s Brexit is coming in and it’s punishingly steep | Brexit | The Guardian

“The thicket of bureaucracy imposed on companies means enduring and added costs for their businesses. It does not feel like “teething problems” to them.”

theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
“It is more like root canal surgery performed without any benefit of anaesthetic. This was a predictable – and predicted – result of wrenching the UK out of the single market and the customs union. “

I disagree. It is more like having your teeth removed without anaesthetic.
Then being provided with an incomplete and poorly fitting set of dentures and being told to be grateful for it.

And being sent the bill.

Mourn Gary Matthews and recognise that Covid conspiracies endanger life | Coronavirus | The Guardian

“He was a gentle guy. He wanted a better world. I am so sorry in recent times he became convinced that Covid was some kind of hoax.”
theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The “hoax” killed him

He had a positive Covid-19 test and went home to isolate

He died, aged 46, alone in his flat in Shrewsbury.

The pernicious myths being promulgated by high profile figures playing down the spread & lethality of the disease have blood on their hands Image
The “influencer” in Shrewsbury is Charlie Parker.

Remember that name, Shrewsbury.

He hasn’t even got the decency to let the death by Covid diagnosis stand in peace.

He suggests Matthew’s had asthma. (News to his family). Others suggest he killed himself. Image

“We have about 30-40 of us. We are sticking together and sticking to the plan,” co-defendant Jessica Watkins, 38, an Army veteran, said while the breach was underway, according to court documents.

I think Watkins ↙️ is pink bobble hat lady who was directing a lot of the action
From messages and posts it seems that there was plenty of advance planning.

Caldwell is a navy veteran.

There seems to be several ex US Forces personnel involved in this.

Whilst 28 day mortality has improved in ICU there seems to be a pre and post December divide with it dis-improving in Dec.

More early Ventilation needed.

Late admissions due to weight of cases?

New variant?

Weight of cases leading to staff spread too thin = poorer outcomes?
Covid far outstrips non-Covid pneumonia (Eg caused by flu)
So far 31% of the 17k Covid patients admitted to ICU in the second wave have died, with another 40% still in hospital.

It would be important to know how many patients are readmitted to ICU/ hospital and what % on non ICU Covid wards die
