Johnson & Johnson’s Coronavirus vaccine is likely to be the next in line available in the United States. With potential results to be expected next week per their CFO, I thought it might be helpful to explain how this vaccine works. The preliminary findings are promising. 🧬🦠🧫
As always if you have any questions, I’ll try to answer them to the best of my ability. I am currently working on Novavax’s information as well.

Our Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Retains Neutralizing Activity Against Emerging Variants First Identified in the U.K. and the Republic of South Africa (B.1.1.7 and 501.V2)!

Sorry for the wait guys. Patience has been appreciated! Vaccination with the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine produced neutralizing titers against all key emerging variants tested, including B.1.1.7 and B.1.351, first identified in the UK and Republic of South Africa, respectively.
The study showed no significant impact on neutralizing titers against the B.1.1.7 variant relative to prior variants. A six-fold reduction in neutralizing titers was observed with the B.1.351 variant relative to prior variants.

Undoubtedly there is going to be a lot of conversation surrounding the new viral variants. This is me being completely transparent when I say this: please don’t panic. The most important thing we can do is prevent the virus from spreading. Let me elaborate.
It will take a large amount of genetic diversity to completely render these vaccines useless. These mutations have not been able to alter the S protein’s shape to the extent that the vaccine-induced antibodies provided by these vaccines are not able to bind at all.
Remember these vaccines (especially these using the whole spike protein) make polyclonal antibody responses. This means that the antibodies created will be able to bind the Coronavirus’ spike in multiple places not just one. Hence a broader range of protection even with changes.

With all due respect, you as an epidemiologist should be quite ashamed for pushing such fear-mongering tweets and circulating this highly misleading study. You are relying on the fact that most people will not understand this information since it’s not in layman’s terms. Let me.
Firstly, the conclusions being drawn from this study is that the 502.V2 variant would render these vaccines ineffective. This is highly unlikely. It will take a large amount of genetic diversity to completely render the current vaccines useless. Why? Vaccines are polyclonal.
This study didn’t even look at the vaccines. They studied OLD blood sera from NATURAL infection. Therefore they already contained low antibody levels. Why is this an issue? Because everyone knows antibodies from natural infection with COVID are weak and wane in 2-3 months.

I have some updates! 🧫🧬🦠
Preliminary data from our studies indicate our vaccine along with Pfizer’s will likely be effective against the Coronavirus variants and ALL of their associated mutations detected in the U.K. and South Africa (B.1.1.7 and 501.V2).
Even if the South African variant becomes more widespread and dominant, the mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna) and adenovirus-vectored (Oxford-AstraZeneca and Russian Sputnik V) vaccines can be modified to be more close-fitting and effective against this variant in a few months.
These mutations have not been able to alter the S protein’s shape to the extent that the vaccine-induced antibodies provided by these vaccines are not able to bind at all. We are still looking into the Brazil-Japan variant B.1.1.248. If you want more information on variants see:

At my first job I was making $7.35 an hour. I worked as a farm hand. I got a second job in fast food to pay for school and there I made even less. 4 degrees later and a Molecular Biologist title, I will still tell you to this day the hardest job I have ever had was in fast food.
Increasing the minimum wage to $15 doesn’t invalidate or anything I have done education-wise. It’s only those who have never experienced poverty or the sheer panic of not being able to afford a bill or having had to worry about where you’d get your next meal that have an issue.
Working lower-income jobs has subjected us to mistreatment and degradation. People in these positions deserve far more than they receive currently. If anything, I wish everyone to be given a living wage as I should have been given when I was in college. Struggling is not living.

Yes, it spreads faster.
No, the vaccines aren’t rendered useless. They will still work.
Here’s why and the science behind it:
This variant has few amino acid changes that the media doesn’t give context on AND it has been around for a couple months- it’s just gaining traction now. I definitely suggest reading and sharing the post above. If you’d like a little more reassurance:

TLDR: these mRNA vaccines of ours utilize the whole spike protein- they make polyclonal antibody responses. This means that the antibodies your vaccinated body produces will be able to bind to the coronavirus spike in multiple places- not just one!
