This is terrific work, a video that everyone should watch.

Let's also talk a bit about Ethan Nordean.
Nordean appears prominently in this video. You can see him early on coordinating the assault on the Capitol with Biggs, and advising others not to announce their plans out loud.
You can also see Nordean leading the charge that led to the breach of the Capitol. However, whether he made it inside himself is not clear. Biggs did, which is why he is currently under arrest.
Nordean is a key figure in the Proud Boys. A resident of the suburban Seattle city of Auburn, he appears to make a living selling vitamin supplements. He was also disavowed by his father, a Burien tavern owner, for his participation in the Proud Boys.

Mostly, he has been a fixture at Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer events in Portland and Seattle. He's particularly noteworthy for the extraordinary levels of thuggish violence he brings to these events.
He's frequently been in the company of white nationalists, such as Jake Van Ott of Identity Evropa.
Nordean became a celebrity in national far-right circles for his actions at the June 30, 2018, Patriot Prayer/Proud Boys march in Portland. At one point, as you can see at right, he suffered a mace shot and was treated for it, but still kept leading the marchers.
The moment that made him infamous, however, had come a little before, when he decked an antifascist and appeared to knock him out cold. The moment was caught on video, which then went wildly viral. Gavin McInnes replayed it on a loop for his audience.

McInnes: “I honestly think that that knockout is a pivot in the movement, it marks the beginning of the end of antifa, and the beginning of being safe and proud to be Trump.”

That particular riot was one of the most violent of the 18 or so that I have covered since 2017. Here's my report on it for the SPLC.

This video was taken from roughly the same zone at around the same time as Nordean's famous punch.
Nordean was arrested by Portland Police that day and then released a short while later with no charges.
We know that Ethan Nordean is a public menace, both as a major Proud Boys figure and leader in their brute assault tactics, and as someone who played a major role in the assault on the Capitol.

What we do not know is why he is not currently under arrest for the latter.

Oh really?
Here's what "inviting violence" looks like.
And this is what it looks like when your immigration plans invite violence.

It’s MLK Day, so here are some shots I took in Selma a few years ago of the memorial to him at the Brown Chapel AME church there.
The thing about Selma is that it has always been majority black, but for years it was run by whites who had multiple ways of intimidating black people into silence and disenfranchisement. Which was what the March to Montgomery was all about.
That particular legacy can also be found around the town: In the name of the bridge (Pettus was a Klan leader), and in the Confederate cemetery, where there’s a memorial to Nathan Bedford Forrest, the KKK founder.

This year I decided I needed an antidote to the ugliness that appears regularly on my timeline. Knowing that getting a daily dose of natural beauty is key to my own mental health, I began sharing a daily (well, sorta) photo of the beauty I’ve seen over the years: #TodaysBeauty.
Over half of the #TodaysBeauty shots have been from my photo archives, but I also posted a large number of pix that were contemporaneous. So to celebrate the New Year, here is a thread of some of my favorites, mostly taken this year, month by month. Enjoy!

A reminder for journalists and law-enforcement investigators using the term “lone wolf”:

I have often mentioned how many of these “Patriots” and “constitutionalists” are in fact scam artists. Here’s another one.

Bunny was one of the far-right sheriffs who met with Jeff Sessions and other senators to bash Obama’s immigration policies in December 2014.

There was a group of “Patriots” who came to D.C. that day to support the sheriffs. While the meeting with Sessions et al was taking place, these characters were protesting outside the White House demanding the president be lynched.

I decided to delete this tweet because (a) enough readers provided me with evidence to persuade me that the Sunshine folks have indeed protested Republicans, and (b) my concerns about the politics of attacking allies were off in this case.
I still have a lot of reservations about how some progressives sometimes conduct their politics -- longtime readers know I have zero patience for faux progressives who focus all their efforts on attacking Democrats while ignoring or even bolstering Trump (koff greenwald koff).
And Sunshine has indulged this tendency somewhat. But in this instance, I don't think that was what was happening here.
