Today in the "fun" world of boot-strapped entrepreneurship....
Remember those sleep sprays we bottled this weekend? All 1,440 of them? By hand? Yeah..... THEY ALL LEAK. 1/
I didn't even freak out when we had this realization. I just laughed and refilled my wine glass and sat very still for about 20 minutes, staring off into space... 2/
Next step was reaching out to the mfg. This is the same mfg we'd used since the beginning with no problems. Let's just say their response to us was basically a well-worded "F-You." Once again, we're on our own. 3/
So we spent a good portion of our daughter's birthday dinner on Monday night brainstorming a solution while she was busy being high on cake sugar. Our Covid bubble is my sister+husband and my in-laws. All 6 of us were crowded around the dining table tossing around ideas. 4/
At one point, craft foam and scissors were brought out, and that is when we had our Eureka moment: circular foam gaskets to insert into the sleep spray lids. And wonder of wonders, it works like a charm! 5/
There is nothing available for purchase that we can use, so we will be using a cutting machine to produce the gaskets ourselves. Insert "WE CAN DO IT" gif here. @silhouetteam feel free to send me some promo blades to support our cause. 6/
So that's part of what we'll be doing over the next few days. In our little sleep spray sweat shop, just living the dream. The good news: I'm gonna be doing all of this with a glass of wine in my hand. The end. 7/

I need to tell you guys something: we have THE NICEST CUSTOMERS.
(This will be a thread, obviously. And no gifs. The story speaks for itself.)

I just got an email from someone who has pre-ordered pillows from us. She saw my tweet about the Miami Teacher of the Year, Teresa Murphy, and how I wished I could send her a pillow, except we're out of stock.
2/5
This customer emailed me to say that she saw the tweet, and she would like me to send HER order to Mrs. Murphy since she knows we're backordered right now. THE SELFLESSNESS. But wait, there's more....

I want to update everyone on why we sold out of pillows yesterday. We were actually working on getting another round of pillows started up a week ago. The amount we had in stock at the time should have lasted us for 3 months based on our past 90 days of sales trends... 1/6
THREE MONTHS.
.
.
.
Let that sink in.

You guys bought 3 months of pillows from us IN ONE DAY. And you're still buying! 2/6
I have no words for this. This company is such a labor of love for us. We have bootstrapped it since day one. No investors. Just a personal loan and every extra penny we could scrape up. 3/6
We’ve had lots of people ask if they can buy items from us to be sent to DC. (Too many for me to respond individually.) Your desire to be a part of something good is a bright spot for our nation and world.
If we complied, we would ultimately profit from your desire to help the troops. Instead of buying a pillow to send to the those working to protect our democracy, we encourage you to donate to any number of military charities (We’re partial to the Green Beret Foundation)
Donate directly to someone in need. @yashar’s thread is a great place to find someone to help.
It's been a long day, but I have pillow news! To recap: National Guard sleeping on hard floors while defending our Capitol. Lots of you tagged us asking if we could help. We tweeted in search of a service member in DC, and had a hit within an hour. 1/8
Our contact is at an airfield outside of DC, and his group is aircraft pilots and maintainers in the Washington, D.C. National Guard. (That is all I am authorized to tell you.) He coordinated with his CO (commanding officer) to make sure our donation would be acceptable. 2/8
Today's mission: packaging.
100 Travel Pillows, 30 Standard Pillows, and 30 Sleep Masks are boxed up and ready to ship out tomorrow to a civilian address (way easier from a logistics perspective) and then taken by my contact to the airfield. 3/8
When we first developed our prototype for our pillow, Mr. Pillow spent MONTHS trying to find a US mfg who would work with us. They would either laugh at him (via email) or never return his emails or phone calls in the first place.

If we weren't looking to give these outfits a $100,000+ order off the bat, they had no interest in us. (And keep in mind that TO THIS DAY we have 100% bootstrapped this thing. We have no investors. And no trust funds. BELIEVE THAT.)
