In 2009, @BarackObama took office under rather similar conditions to @JoeBiden. The prior administration had completely failed to respond to a crisis. The economy was diving into the worst recession since the Great Depression.
How did Mitch and the GOP embrace "bipartisanship"?
“The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president”
- Mitch
“We're going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”
- John Boehner (the GOP House Leader)
Over the two Obama terms, the GOP became the party of complete obstruction, refusing to pass a comprehensive stimulus despite the continued recession, and refusing to seat judges (including a Supreme Court Justice).
That's what Trumpism is: it's not a deviation from the Republican Party. It's the end result of a political strategy rooted solely in obstruction. It's the rejection of the legitimacy of the opposing party.
We are seeing how deeply autocratic that is, increasingly every day.
We heard it in Trump's "lock her up"
We saw it in the wholesale rejection of an election.
And then there's Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who supported calls to execute Democratic politicians.
It all stems from McConnell's complete obstruction approach to governance.
That's all the GOP's calls for bipartisanship - while they are in the minority in both the Senate and the House, while a Democrat sits in the White House - represent.
They don't want joint legislation. They want to obstruct.
And we've seen where that leads.
Instead, @JoeBiden needs to strike a different path.
Rather than constantly allowing McConnell opportunities to obstruct and delay endlessly, Biden and Democrats need to turn a people-focused vision into a reality.
They have the power. They just need to use it.
Pass COVID relief.
Pass meaningful legislation to avert climate change.
Make it *easy* for Americans to participate in our democracy.
And when 2022 comes, let the voters decide what they prefer.
The do-nothing, obstructionist GOP, or a government that works for its people.

Good! Until the Republican Party deal with those in their own ranks who incited an attempted coup, who spread anti-semitic conspiracy theories, and who say Democratic politicians should be EXECUTED, The Democrats shouldn't even be reaching out to them.
One Republican member of Congress in particular peddles theories about the California wildfires being started by Jewish space lasers, says Democratic politicians should be executed, and thinks mass shootings like Parkland and Sandy Hook were staged.
Today @JoeBiden announced that he is committing to a historic society-wide mobilization to stop the climate crisis, create millions of good jobs, and roll back centuries of systemic environmental racism.
Many of the things we have been fighting for became a reality including:
☀️Establishment of White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy and National Climate Task Force
☀️Creation of a Civilian Climate Corps modeled after the New Deal’s Civilian Conservation Corps to put people to work in government jobs tackling the climate crisis
☀️Commitment to a whole-of-government approach to Environmental Justice, including delivering 40% of climate investments to frontline communities
☀️Creation of Interagency working group to ensure economic development and a just transition for fossil fuel communities
Movements elected @JoeBiden. Now, it's time to make sure our demands happen. This first week of executive orders are a heartening start.
But we're not stopping there.

Representation alone is not enough. We also need the political will to fight for a better future.
Warnock's victory - while historic for being the first Black Senator from Georgia - is critical because Senate control puts survival checks on the table.
Deb Haaland's appointment as Interior Secretary is important not just for who she is, but for what she could do, and the executive orders coming out of the Biden administration are hopefully just a taste.
Heather Boushey - with her focus on people's financial well-being (and not the stock market) - is the type of voice we need in the halls of government.
We are also confident that Heather Boushey will internalize the necessity for our government to structure its work around the national project of averting the climate crisis.
