Myanmar's new military regime has ordered a “temporary” ban on Facebook following widespread public criticism of Monday's coup on the popular platform.
The order from the Transport and Telecommunications Ministry instructs all mobile operators, international gateway service providers and Internet service providers to block Facebook from February 3 until midnight on February 7.
The reason given for the order is the threat to public order posed by individuals spreading rumours and making “disturbances”.
The move comes amid growing expressions of outrage over the coup by Myanmar citizens, who have turned to social media to express their dissent against military rule.
