MTG short take: values, morals, hopes and dreams that are universally shared by Americans across the political spectrum are only "partisan" in the sense that they are wholly rejected by majorities of the @HouseGOP.
That is cause for optimism insofar as the country is not nearly as polarized as it looks from within DC. But it's cause for great sadness for what it means about a once great political party.
The @GOP - a party that emerged to stop the spread of slavery, that gave our country the great gift of Abraham Lincoln - still has registered voters who are pro-decency, pro-equality, pro-science, pro-market, pro-truth.
But their elected leaders - at least in the House - cannot be reliably counted on to defend any of those foundational principles. Occasionally perhaps, but never consistently.
The party of Lincoln, in the state of Lincoln is now censuring @RepKinzinger. For what? For honoring his oath to defend our constitution against domestic enemies who incited the attack against the Capitol. politico.com/news/2021/02/0…
I have not come to praise @RepKinzinger. We disagree on a lot. But when the elected @GOP officials target him instead of the kooks in their caucus, it speaks to a party that has lost it's soul.
But do take heart. A commitment to bipartisanship at the voter level is alive and well. The interests of the vast majority of voters across all political persuasions is well represented in Congress.
The fact that those views are primarily in one party is the result of gerrymandering and a Senate that - by design - represents land rather than people. That's an institutional problem. But the country is much more unified than it looks. /fin
