Let’s not flip the script on educators and support staff. Many have died serving and defending their students. Gov’t is responsible for inadequate vaccines, for inadequate testing program where folks wait weeks for results, for inability to fully adhere to CDC guidance,
for pre-existing conditions that have long plagued schools such as: overcrowding, poor ventilation, inadequate tech/internet bandwidth, inadequate maintenance budgets & insufficient social/emotional support.
Some folks who have a lot to say about schools these days actively worked to cut funding to them or stood on the sidelines during prior budget fights. Other than students & their families, no one knows the value of in-person education more than educators.
They continue to speak up because they understand that they must first establish trust in the classroom and that all students are safe and supported.
Rather than scapegoating educators who continue to work their hearts out for their students under trying circumstances and have had to operationalize every change via tweets late at night,
let’s pour energy into holding gov’t leaders accountable for a functioning vaccine distribution plan and testing program, and for a well-resourced school system where teachers and students don’t have to be bundled up in winter coats in their classes because the open window
is the only source of ventilation. And the budget fight now and ahead isn’t only about safely reopening schools, but it is also about accounting for the generational impacts this has all had on students.
Educators I speak with have always centered that in my conversations with them and that’s why they continue to forcefully speak up. Teachers and school leaders have spent money from their own pocket to get their students hot food and adaptive tech for remote learning.
Students, teachers, parents, and all stakeholders deserve better than division and distortion. Call your federal officials to insist on more vaccine supply/greater testing capacity and that federal dollars for schools aren’t supplanted.
Call your state electeds to ensure no cuts in state aid to schools. Call your city electeds to ensure they prioritize school budgets for safe reopening and accounting for the needs of our students. That’s the energy also urgently needed right now.

Those who defend the Gates-Albany partnership to “reimagine schools” claim it doesn’t hurt to consult a “successful” person (with business ties) on how to make the system work better.
My mother is a retired paraprofessional and my father is a retired District 75 teacher, who are immigrants from the former Soviet Union. They escaped persecution and came to America for a better life for their family. They’re hugely successful in my eyes.
Here’s what they tell me, which was reinforced by my own teaching experience: we need more social workers, nurses, and counselors to address the increasing amount of trauma and healthcare needs our students are experiencing, from early childhood to higher ed.
To help Coney Island Hospital ensure there’s enough space & functionality at their main campus to serve most ill, the city has set up a remote drive-thru testing site at Ida G Israel clinic 2925 W19th Street. (7 days a week 830am-4pm). 1/5
ONLY PEOPLE WHO CALL THE HOTLINE AND ARE APPROVED BY A PHYSICIAN ON THE CALL CAN GET APPOINTMENT AT DRIVE-THRU LOCATION!
The hotline is for folks feeling severe symptoms & in high risk categories: 1-844-NYC-4NYC.
You MUST CALL and get approved by doctor on the hotline... 2/5
to be sent for testing. Hotline is open and drive-thru testing is now open.
If you are not approved for testing at site they will turn you away. I repeat. ONLY pre-approved people will be tested. If you don’t get pre-approved the police will escort you away. 3/5
I’ve shared with DOE a temporary contingency plan that I believe could work in terms of a limited system shutdown while servicing the most vulnerable. I’m awaiting a response.
I believe DOE should consider adopting summer school model at this time. Those children that require services should receive them at a few select school sites in each borough. During summer school, school sites are combined into a few buildings in each borough to service students
These sites should also be able to provide sufficient meals (grab and go meals) to students who need them in addition to all medical services they require. Each site would also be staffed with adequate healthcare professionals.
If this happened today, because of the closure of the loophole in the Penal Code, it would automatically be considered rape, no questions. A lesser charge simply isn't justice.
