It is a disservice when we only measure violence or catastrophe only in death tolls. Take war for example.
People are killed, and I don't say that lightly, but there are other living survivors with wounds that will never scab over. Think amputees and people coping with PTSD.
People suffering hearing loss from explosions. Impaired or loss of vision from flying debris. Heightened paranoia. Infections. There is a variety of shit that is short of death that goes unaccounted for by mainstream media.
It was until years ago that I realized that every time I see a daily toll of Chicago shootings, it's very much possible the city's disabled population grows. You don't read that part.
I think one of the ways violence is normalized is by power overlooking, reducing, and simplifying the myriad effects of harm and not seeking to amplify survivors of it.

Update y'all:
- I've had two city inspectors who have gotten on my landlord's bumper! I believe one called him a "cocksucker" under his breath. Don't quote me.
- A member of DSA slid into the DMs pointing me to resources.
- Strangers #onhere gave me law advice.
- Heat is on.
With that said, look at the responses to that tweet. If people have trouble with heat, there may be local groups that could help or even people who have legal experience #onhere.
My landlord doesn't live in Chicago. He's from California and has a San Diego area code. So while heat goes out before a polar vortex, his Black tenants had to find resources. He suggested Black people should open their ovens for heat— IT'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
I had a great 11 am phone conversation with Keith Lamar (@FREEKeithLaMar). He sounds well and tells me that he is grateful for all the new support he has received. He's currently reading Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Are Watching God" with juvenile youth via zoom.
November 16, 2023 is Keith's execution date.
He's been in solitary confinement for over 27 years.
He tells me he's been writing his autobiography. I tell him that I wonder about the energy around federal executions extending to the state level.
He says that there is a lot of movement in Ohio and people in favor of getting rid of the death penalty.
Radical histories must be protected. You can't talk about the Panther's breakfast program as just mutual aid. They called it survival programs for survival pending revolution. The goal of all their programs was to be amongst the people and build towards the overthrow of the US.
If they were just feeding people for free, they'd be a food pantry.
All of their programs were intentionally designed to show Black people what socialism looked like. Huey P. even said Black people weren't a reading population, so you have to demonstrate what socialism is.
Read the Huey P. Newton Reader. Don't idolize the man.
Read the theory and self-critique of the organizational praxis. He states that he and other Panthers knew that every day could be their last day. They knew what their objective was and how their enemy (US) would respond.
"A frequent rumor among non-Muslims was 'Malcolm X is making a pile of money.' All Muslims at least knew better than that. Me making money? The F.B.I. and the C.I.A. and the I.R.S. all combined can't turn up a thing I got, beyond a car to drive and a seven-room house to live in."
"(And by now the Nation of Islam is jealously and greedily trying to take away even that house.) I had access to money. Yes! Elijah Muhammad would authorize for me any amount that I asked for."
"But he knew, as every Muslim official knew, that every nickel and dime I ever got was used to promote the Nation of Islam. My attitude toward money generated the only domestic quarrel that I have ever had with my beloved wife Betty."
