In light of the @USATODAY reporting on sexual misconduct/domestic violence allegations within LSU's football team, I decided to ask what type of preventative training was being done in LSU athletics. Here are some of the highlights of what I found... lailluminator.com/2021/02/08/lsu…
From 2016-2020, the bulk of LSU Athletics' sexual misconduct prevention training was provided PFA Consulting, a group owned by former Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe. During this same time, nine members of the football team were accused of sexual misconduct/domestic violence.
LSU's athletic department, with funding provided by Tiger Athletic Foundation, spent at least $128k on sexual misconduct training from 2016-2020 -- again at a time when many football players were being accused of sexual violence/domestic abuse.
It's not just that 9 LSU football players were accused of sexual violence/abuse. At least five times, the alleged victims of these players were women who worked in the athletic department or athletes. That part of the reason I want interested in their prevention efforts.
The @NCAA does recommend specific programs for sexual violence prevention training its "tool kit" for college coaches and sports administrators, but the training used by LSU isn't one of those recommended.
PFA Consulting -- the program LSU does use -- comes to Baton Rouge three times per year to hold sessions with LSU coaches, staff and athletes. It goes over the university resources that athletes could use if they wanted to report misconduct.
Interestingly, the program requires that people go through sexual violence prevention training separate from those who supervise them. So for example, coaches are allowed to be in sessions with their teams. That supposed to make it more comfortable for people to open up.
Even though allegations of sexual misconduct were piling up in the athletics department, the company conducting the the department's sexual misconduct prevention training - PFA consulting -- was rehired three times.
LSU said PFA should continue to be paid to provide sexual misconduct training because the athletic department received a “low number of HR complaints”. This was during years where football players were accused of abusing other athletes/women working in the department.
PFA is not the only kind of sexual misconduct prevention program provided by LSU Athletics. The department also sent me a list of speakers that it had address the football team. At least four of the 15 would have talked about sexual misconduct/violence against women.
Among those speakers who addressed the LSU football team is Lisa Friel, who oversees sexual misconduct investigations for the @NFL. (She is also a former NYC prosecutor who dealt with sex crimes.)
Other speakers brought in to talk to the LSU football team include Baton Rouge's police chief, sheriff and district attorney. One former BR police chief who owns a private firm that does motivational speaking was also on the list.
At the recommendation of PFA (the consultant), LSU Athletics also formed an internal "grievance team" in 2017 to handle misconduct in the athletic department. The department says the team is not supposed to be a substitute for the Title IX office or LSU police.
But among the members of the LSU grievance team is Verge Ausberry, the athletic official who declined to report a football player when the player admitted to hitting a girlfriend via a text message. All the grievance team members are athletics administrators.

One Breaux Bridge pharmacy tells me they had already signed up 70 people to get their 100 doses of vaccine by the end of last week and filled up the other 30 slots this morning. On top of that, they have 100 additional voicemails from people seeking the vaccine. #lalege #lagov
The pharmacy is going to spend all day today scheduling appointments with the people on their list...and tomorrow and Wednesday they will actually administer the shots. Again, there's only 10k doses at pharmacies and 480k people ages 70 and over just became eligible. #lalege
I just talked to another pharmacist from Opelousas who says that he opened the phones at 8 a.m. and has 200 people who want the vaccine already. He won't be giving out doses today. "We haven't even received the stuff yet." #lalege #lagov

Today, commercial pharmacies in Louisiana are expected to get 1000s of #COVID19 vaccine doses for the first time. Also, this week is the 1st time lots of ppl who aren't health care workers/institution residents are eligible to receive the vaccine. #lalege lailluminator.com/2021/01/04/7-t…
I've put together a list of things you should know about Louisiana's vaccine distribution at the moment. You can find it here. lailluminator.com/2021/01/04/7-t… #lalege #lagov
As state above, Louisiana is entering its fourth week of vaccine distribution and this is the first time large groups of people who aren't working in a health care facility or living in a nursing home/long-term care facility are eligible for the vaccine here. #lalege #lagov

To accommodate social distancing, they've also stuck voting machines in hallways in the coliseum....They aren't just on the main arena floor. Last week, election officials told there would be about 100 machines in the building. #laelex
This is kind of nice. Every time there's a new voter, an election official yells "FIRST TIME VOTER!" and everyone cheers. #laelex
And here's the voting scene on the main floor of the coliseum in Lake Charles. I count almost 70 machines. As I said earlier, there are more in the hallways. #laelex

NEW PODCAST: I interviewed @Louisiana_sos (who oversees the state's elections) about what to expect on election day tomorrow. lailluminator.com/podcast/what-t… #lalege #lagov
.@Louisiana_sos says he expects voter turnout overall to be around 70 percent which he characterized as being "about the norm" for a presidential election. The 2016 presidential election turnout was about 68 percent. #lalege #lagov
.@Louisiana_sos also said people should prepare themselves to not know the election results until Wednesday because some parishes might not be able to finish counting until then. At best, he thinks returns will come in after midnight. #lalege #lagov

I'll get off this @LSUfootball stuff after this last comment.

My concern is that one of the most powerful institutions in the state (LSU) hasn't been honest or transparent about what's happening with #COVID19 when it was in their best interest not to be honest about it.
It's not really about whether players should be playing football or not. It's about the fact that @LSU is making a lot of decisions right now that could potentially affect the health of hundreds of thousands of people in our state.
With football, they spun a narrative that practices were safe -- implying that players weren't contracting the virus. Clearly they were.

So what does that mean when LSU tells us it is safe to hold in-person classes? To have dorms open? To have people in Tiger Stadium?

Today, I had an extended interview with St. Louis County Executive @DrSamPage about the region's response to the #coronavirus. You can listen to it on the Politically Speaking podcast feed through your iPhone/Android...OR by going to this link. news.stlpublicradio.org/post/political…
In the interview, @DrSamPage started off saying one of the biggest challenges in containing the #coronavirus is the lack of widespread testing.

"The news of the day really is we don't have enough testing. ...It completely changes how we approach this public health emergency."
.@DrSamPage says there is a "reasonable chance" that his "stay-at-home" order for St. Louis County might extend beyond it's April 22nd deadline.

Page said the high point for #coronavirus cases in the St. Louis area is likely to be in late April, though it's hard to predict.
