Thread:"...one overlooked factor of Qanon: there’s an interactive, crowd-sourcing component where people compete, receive a “reward” (dopamine) for being the *cleverest*, connecting the furthest dispersed dots, & for (most absurdly) advancing the “story” the furthest/quickest."
Is Qanon morphing into a religion right before our very eyes?
At a minimum, we are witnessing a perfect storm-like convergence of numerous features of modern society that have created a fertile ground for conspiratorial delusions. 1/ religiondispatches.org/in-the-name-of…
These features unsurprisingly run parallel to both Trumpism and Qanon.....and include: celebrity hero-worship, reality TV, weaponization of technology, narcissism, victimhood, a neurotransmitter called dopamine, religious conditioning,…2/
Lost in @tedcruz and @Sethrogen's back and forth is something worth noting: an apparent shift in demographics and ideological platforms of the Republican Party.
Cruz implicitly promotes the Republican party as being pro-union. This is not only a break from the past, but....1/
... the suddenly pro-union position is also consistent with other positions that had historically been opposed by the Republican Party such as protectionist policies/tariffs supported and implemented under Trump: 2/
Regardless of whether these ideological shifts were initially the result of a blind, cult of personality allegiance that is now morphing into a more general leaderless (Trumpless) populistic tribalism, the shift, even if relatively nominal, is real: 3/nytimes.com/interactive/20…
April 17th, per the Virginia GOP: "On Friday, President Donald Trump tweeted, “LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!”
Trump's Narcissism not only incites the violence, but the narcissism causes him to desire the violence because after being "rejected" by a majority of the country, the violence soothes his pathologically fragile/wounded ego....3/
Trump's call to @GaSecofState highlights the intersection of "Trickle Down Pathology", the emasculinization of the rule of law, and a gaslighting technique I describe as "the manipulation of the interaction timeline".
To review: 1)Trump attempted to extort election fraud....1/
2) @GaSecofState, perhaps as a result of wanting to protect himself...as well as American Democracy...learned his lesson after taking a phone call from @LindseyGrahamSC, refused to take Trump's first 18 phone calls (attempts to commit voter fraud). 2/ news.yahoo.com/why-trump-may-…
3) Finally, relenting, and taking Trump's call...... Raffensperger recorded the call and publicized it only after Trump attacked him and the process. 3/
Yes, unfortunately, the people who need to read and learn about it the most, are the ones who are most reluctant to do. I've written about the cognitive processes that contribute to this problem:
Trump faces potential indictment/incarceration for criminality. He's desperate, and feels his only chance to avoid criminal liability is to do everything possible, including breaking more laws, to avoid accountability for previous criminality. He has nothing to lose at this point
The incentives are aligned with Trump acting recklessly, criminally, and treasonously......2/
This isn't the first time the incentive structure is misaligned with a president's conduct. There are parallels to the OLC memo that insulates a president from indictment:
