When Emilia Sykes became an Ohio legislator, she had trouble getting in the statehouse. Security often searched & questioned her while white lobbyists & aides walked in freely. One day she asked the officer why he wouldn’t let her in. “You don’t look like a state legislator.” 1/7
Sykes always knew representation matters. Growing up as a dancer, she saw the diverse bodies of the Alvin Ailey troupe, letting her know she could grace the stage too. But in the portraits lining the halls of Ohio's statehouse, it was clear white men had long held that space.

But now, as the House minority leader of the most diverse Democratic caucus in Ohio history, Sykes is leading the agenda, helping pass more bills in her first year than were passed in the previous two sessions combined.

Sykes launched a movement demanding #WeBelongHere to elevate Black women’s voices in the halls of power. She helped form the nation’s first state-level Black Maternal Health Caucus and sponsored a bill to compensate Ohioans who have been wrongfully imprisoned.
4/7
She earned bipartisan praise for passing legislation to help victims of dating violence, an issue she’s worked on since law school. Last year, Sykes was honored for her leadership with @emilyslist's Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.
5/7
@emilyslist Sykes draws her inspiration from a number of Black women: Helen Rankin, Ohio’s 1st Black woman legislator; now-congresswoman @RepBeatty, the 1st woman to serve as the Ohio House Dem leader; & her mother, Barbara Sykes, the 1st Black woman on the Akron City Council at-large.

@emilyslist@RepBeatty “It is hard work, I know it firsthand, but if @StaceyAbrams can lead the effort to flip a deep Southern state blue & if @KamalaHarris can break through the glass ceiling, than I, too, can do my part to help show Black woman & girls that we belong here.” @EmiliaSykesOH

People of color are dying at a higher rate from COVID. #BlackLivesMatter is putting police violence center stage. Black owned businesses are struggling. @SpeakerAJones, the first woman & first Black Speaker of the Maryland House, knows this is the moment for a Black Agenda. 1/8
@SpeakerAJones Jones served in the Maryland House for 20+ years before assuming the speakership. During that time, she also worked as a civil servant in Baltimore government, the county where she was born & raised. Her no-nonsense approach to legislating made her a leader among colleagues.
2/8
@SpeakerAJones Since she became speaker in April of 2019, Jones has pushed for increased funding for HBCUs & the repeal of legislation that has shielded police officers from accountability. She’s been a champion for education funding, especially prioritizing school construction.

In the post Civil War era of Reconstruction, some 2,000 Black men served in public office, 600+ in state legislatures. While the number of Black leaders was far from representative of the Black population, their elections were nonetheless a testament to Black organizing power 1/7
After the union declared victory in 1865, the Black community organized Equal Rights Leagues, protested discrimination, & demanded suffrage. Following the ratification of the 14th & 15th amendments, Union League branches encouraged Black political activism across the south.

The newly elected legislators during this period came from a range of backgrounds. Many had been born into slavery, like Alabama’s Jeremiah Haralson & Florida’s Charles Pearce. Others, like Arkansas’ William Henry Grey & Georgia’s Tunis Campbell, were born free.
