This morning Senate Majority Leader Shirkey attended a fundraiser in Lansing. He declined to answer questions about his recently revealed comments (that aspects of the Jan. 6 insurrection were “staged” and a “hoax”) when he left the event freep.com/story/news/loc…
Here’s some (admittedly not very compelling) video of him walking away
This was a fundraiser for Shirkey’s PAC, Compete Michigan PAC. I saw people regularly coming in and out, with a couple dozen mingling inside. Here’s a list of some of the largest sponsors (including some of the biggest businesses and associations in Michigan).
.@SenMikeShirkey delivered today’s invocation to start the Senate floor session. He talks about everyone in Michigan has the desire to move forward in a positive direction but some times “we get off track”
Sen. @stephanielily giving an impassioned speech on the floor. Doesn't mention Leader Shirkey by name, but clearly about him.
"Forgiveness requires genuine apologies. It demands acknowledgement of specific wrongdoing."
"Today, I am more sad than I am angry. I am more disappointed than I am surprised."
Says he's not going to address specific comments from Shirkey "because I just don't have the words."
But asks Shirkey to reflect on the prayer he gave this morning.
.@jimananich: "This is a chance for all of us to do some self-reflecting."
Says he is embarrassed by the remarks made by Shirkey.
And with that, the Senate is over
Story: @SenMikeShirkey opened the Senate on Wednesday with a prayer.
Moments later, a hot mic caught him telling @LtGovGilchrist, "I frankly don’t take back any of the points" made recently about aspects of US Capitol attack being a "hoax" and "staged" freep.com/story/news/pol…
Pointing to convo, @LtGovGilchrist waved off Shirkey apology from Tuesday: "It is clear that his so-called apology was not heartfelt, nor did it come from a place of humility and understanding. Rather, it was an empty gesture made for political expediency" freep.com/story/news/pol…
Shirkey wouldn't answer my ?s today when he left a fundraiser for his PAC.
Jimmy Greene, head of ABC Michigan, was at the fundraiser. He said Shirkey has supported his industry, but he disagreed w/"hoax" comments, saying they create a "credibility gap" freep.com/story/news/pol…

"Happy budget day!" Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Stamas, R-Midland, says as House and Senate lawmakers prepare to hear from Gov. Whitmer's administration on their budget proposals.
Stamas: "Despite the differences we have...I look forward to working with the governor and our legislative colleagues" on a plan that helps our state and its people.
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Thomas Albert, R-Lowell, speaking now. Echoes Stamas, recognizing economic uncertainty and potential learning loss due to the pandemic.
But says moving forward, "strong oversight" is a priority.
Story w/@clarajanehen: Video shows @SenMikeShirkey say bad actors, not Trump supporters, "staged" the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, calling the idea that people who attended Trump's rally then walked down the street to storm the Capitol a "hoax" freep.com/story/news/loc…
"Hell, Mitch McConnell was part of it," Shirkey also said. "I think they wanted to have a mess."
Spox for @GovWhitmer responds: "It’s disappointing that Sen. Shirkey is spending his time on political potshots, indulging conspiracy theories, and expressing empathy for the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building." freep.com/story/news/loc…
Bart Pickelman, the head of Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) telling lawmakers about their COVID-19 workplace safety work.
Look at the number of workplace complaints received pre- and post-pandemic. *Substantially* more during the pandemic.
As one might expect, the number of enforcement inspections were also way up during the pandemic.
This committee meeting has focused substantially more on the impact on a business' public perception if cited for violating COVID-19 regulations, as opposed to the efficacy of these orders, which ones worked best/didn't and whether additional orders are needed

New: Michigan house leaders remove Rep. Gary Eisen, a GOP lawmaker, from his committee assignments.
In a Monday radio interview, Eisen alluded to disruptions of the Electoral College vote. When asked if he could ensure no one would be hurt, he said no freep.com/story/news/pol…
Eisen also acknowledged some legislative buildings are closed today due to a threat of violence.
But he called that threat "convenient," suggesting it is being used to dissuade pro-Trump attempts at disrupting Electoral College proceedings freep.com/story/news/pol…
Eisen, asked if he could ensure people will be safe: "No. I don’t know. Because what we’re doing today is uncharted. It hasn’t been done."
Comments came at roughly same time Stephen Miller mentioned states seating alternate delegates to Electoral College freep.com/story/news/pol…
