It's difficult for me to articulate my thoughts about the increasing & escalating anti-Asian attacks. To be honest, I was scared to tweet because of how complicated the situation is. This requires nuance, which is especially hard to have right now & we Americans are so bad at it.
There is significant anti-Blackness in the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) community. We APIDAs need to do better and take intentional and deliberate steps to be actively anti-racist. We started making moves this summer and there is more work to be done.
But there is also anti-Asian sentiment in some POC communities (it's a given for White Americans). We have to talk about that.
We Asian Americans are pressured to be subservient in the US. To put our needs and troubles last. To place value on everyone else's experience before our own. To not even tell our own stories.
They expect us to pretend we're doing fine, no, great.
But we're not.
I have no great answers on what to do. Listen to us. Listen to what we have to say. Listen to the community, not just the celebs. Include us in your anti-racist work. We have been here since the 1500s, we have contributed and died for this country.

Hey y'all! I'm Naomi Ko and I am one of the organizers for the #StartWith8Hollywood initiative, which pairs female-identifying filmmakers of color with mentors, gatekeepers, and decision makers. I would like to share some insight into our program for transparency. 1/13
From our own personal experience we know that the price to APPLY (not even participate, which I will get to that in a bit) is a barrier for WOC filmmakers and artists. Again this program is FREE! We're being called "radical" for this, but it really should be the standard. 3/13
