Pelosi kicks off her presser with COVID relief, not impeachment

"We hope to have this all done by the end of February," she says of Biden COVID bill
Pelosi: "I'm particularly interested in how women are affected by the pandemic, but also by this legislation.

"Over 2.3M women have been forced to leave the workforce entirely, including 1 million moms." cbsnews.com/news/covid-cri…
"Women's labor force participation rate is now just about 57 percent, the lowest level in 33 years.

"For women of color, the situation is even worse."
NEWS: Pelosi says she will offer legislation giving Capitol Police officers Congressional Gold Medal for their bravery defending Capitol on Jan. 6.

"They are martyrs for our democracy"
Pelosi says she was briefed again this AM by Ret. Gen. Russel Honore on how to immediately secure Capitol.

But she again alludes to a commission to do a longer review examining what went wrong and why agencies were not better coordinated

When McCarthy called Trump and said the Capitol was under siege, POTUS initially blamed Antifa, JHB says.

McC pushed back and said the rioters were Trump supporters.

“Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are,” Trump replied.
.@HerreraBeutler told constituents during town hall that Trump’s call with McCarthy on 1/6 was “chilling”

“The president was basically saying ‘nah, I’m OK with this’” as the Capitol was under attack, JHB said. chronline.com/news/as-impeac… Image
JHB also told her local paper, The Daily News, last month about the McCarthy/Trump call on 1/6.

“The President said, ‘Kevin, they’re not my people.’”

“‘Yes they are, they just came through my windows and my staff is running for cover. Yeah, they’re your people. Call them off” Image

.@RepTedLieu pointing out that key former Trump officials --- Mattis, John Kelly, Bolton, Mulvaney, McMaster & Farah -- blamed Trump for fomenting violence at the Capitol on 1/6
Lieu puts quote up on screen from Trump's Transpo Sec Elaine Chao, who resigned from Cabinet over the 1/6 attack.

She just happens to be wife of Mitch McConnell
Lieu says he's not afraid of Trump running for president again. He's afraid of Trump losing the presidency again and provoking another attack on Capitol

NEW: House impeachment managers team confirms it will show previously unseen Capitol security camera footage in Senate impeachment trial today
"We'll be using footage never seen before that shows a view of the Capitol that is quite extraordinary, and a view of the attack that has never been public before," says a senior aide on House impeach managers' team
Unclear if Dem impeachment managers have access to body cams from DC Metro Police, who were assisting on 1/6.

Capitol Police don't have body cams but some officers, I'm told, used their personal iPhones to record the rioters attacking them.

GOP senators really piling on Trump attorney Castor
"I think the trial is a waste of time" says @SenTedCruz, former TX solicitor general.

He adds that Trump attorneys were not terribly effective and praises Raskin.

"Jamie Raskin was impressive. He's a serious lawyer"
COLLINS: "I was perplexed by the first [Trump] attorney who did not seem to make any arguments at all"

Calls Castor's calling out of Ben Sasse "inappropriate"

DEMS’ TRIAL STRATEGY: The nine House impeachment managers plan to avoid any long or abstract legal analysis in favor of efforts to tell the “gripping and spellbinding story” of how Trump incited the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

thehill.com/homenews/house…
“The case for the president’s guilt is overwhelming and the evidence is devastating,” one impeachment manager says. “We’re going to tell America the gripping and spellbinding story of what happened on Jan. 6.”
The nine House prosecutors plan to use video in this week's Senate trial. LOTS OF IT.

Unclear, however, if they will have access to previously unseen surveillance video from the dozens of security cameras in the Capitol or will only us footage in the public domain.
