The California Democratic Party's ADEM delegate elections have mostly wrapped up, with results available for all but one of the 80 districts in the state. What's the big deal about ADEMs? Details in the thread. 1/
CA Dem Delegates vote on who the Democratic Party endorses in state & congressional elections, such as Assemblymember, Governor, Propositions, and Congress. There are over 3,000 of us. 1/3 of delegates are elected in the ADEM elections. adems2021.vote/faq
The ADEM elections take place every 2 years, in the January of odd-numbered years. Normally there are in-person events (the name stands for Assembly District Election Meeting) where Dems in each of the state's 80 assembly districts vote in person. This year, it was vote by mail.
Last year, about 50,000 people voted statewide. This year, 169,000 ballots were requested, though only 60,000 got counted, in part due to delays in the mail. adem.cadem.org
Even with two extensions to the deadline, the continued delays in the mail due to the Trump administration meant that two weeks was not enough time for all ballots to be mailed out to party members and received back in time.
Throughout the last week of April, CA Dem delegates will meet online for the 2021 convention. We'll be electing party leadership, who will serve for the next 4 years. The party will also be endorsing legislation, which you can recommend here: cadem.org/our-party/stan…
The current chair of the CA Dem Party, Rusty Hicks, is running for re-election. Challenging him is Delaine Eastin, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction and a 2018 candidate for Governor.
Candidates have been making the rounds at Democratic clubs around the state. For example, @DelaineEastin came to the @OurRevEastBay meeting to share her plans & experience in politics - which started on the city council of Union City, where there's a school named after her.
Delaine talked about the need for long range thinking, giving as an example how Union City cleaned up industrial land near its BART station and has been replacing it with affordable & mixed-income housing to create a neighborhood where people don't need to drive everywhere.
Delaine also talked about her role in getting rent control for mobile homes in Union City, as well as her time in the state legislature, passing a landfill cleanup bill and fighting for requiring charter schools to have collective bargaining (unfrotunately that bill was vetoed)
In addition to a party chair, the CA Dem party also will be electing two Vice Chairs, a Secretary, a Controller, and about 20 Regional Directors. For those who want all the details, you can read the bylaws here: cadem.org/wp-content/upl…
So, who are the ADEM delegates that have been elected? A list of the results are on the CA Dem website here: adem.cadem.org/assembly-distr…

A Look at Taipei Zoning & City Planning - a thread! A close look (complete with technical details!) at one of Asia's newest yet interesting cities. 1/
As cities in Asia go, Taipei is a very young city - comparable to San Francisco in age. Until 1949, it was just a province capital. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_o… 2/
The core of Taipei city is a roughly a 4 mile x 4 mile square, boxed in by mountains and rivers. The oldest parts are by the river and train station.
Been doing some gaming on the holidays. There's a lot of differences between different city building games, and it reflects the places where they're designed. Here's a thread on SimCity, Cities Skylines, Transport Tycoon, A-Train, and Soviet Republic. 1/
Different city building games have both different player roles, as well as differences over what you have control over. While all of them let you build roads and rails, there are differences when it comes to zoning, as well as whether players can build homes & businesses. 2/
SimCity is one of the older ones. The first version came out in 1989, the most recent one in 2013. Surprisingly the game mechanics have not changed much over a quarter century - the game still does not have mixed use zoning or buildings.

Know the difference between the 1978 Prop 13 tax revolt which underfunded CA schools, the 2020 Prop 13 school bond (@YesOnProp13), & the coming Schools & Communities First ballot measure to reform 1978 Prop 13 so that large commercial property pays more taxes. (@Schools1stCA) 1/
@YesOnProp13@Schools1stCA The 1978 Prop 13 tax revolt cut property taxes but devastated California schools & local government. While sold as a way to protect low-income seniors from getting priced out of their home, it also cut taxes for corporate property such as refineries, skyscrapers, theme parks. 2/
@YesOnProp13@Schools1stCA The 1978 Prop 13 limited property taxes to the value at the time of purchase, plus a 2% increase (not adjusted for inflation) each year. This shifts the tax burden to new buyers, as well as to homeowners (who sell property more often than corporations) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978_Cali… 3/
