בוקר טוב לכולם!

Let’s talk about antisemitism during the Viking Age as shown in the work of Snorri Sturluson (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snorri_St…), who compiled and in part authored the Prose Edda, from which we get most of Norse mythology.

(I’m taking most of this from Richard Cole’s “Snorri and the Jews” (2017)).

The relationship of medieval Scandinavians to their Viking Age (793-1066) predecessors was some pride over their accomplishments mixed with a heaping helping of contempt over their heathen ways.

2/ Image
When the Scandinavians were officially converted to Christianity (Denmark 1104, Norway 1154, Sweden 1164), many took to the new religion with as much fervor as they’d shown in worshiping the Viking pantheon of Odin, Thor, Freyja, etc. (There were many holdouts, of course)

3/ Image
Because Snorri lived in the 12th & 13th centuries, this meant scorning their predecessors & holdouts as pagans & heathens—and worse: “witches, troublemakers, and ne’er-do-wells; relics of a bygone age, waiting either for conversion or the righteous violence of the pious.”

4/ Image
This attitude was extended to every “heathen.” Including Jews, despite the fact that there were none at the time (that we know of) in Scandinavia or in Iceland, Snorri’s home.

As in the rest of Europe during Snorri’s lifetime, antisemitism was rife in Scandinavia.

5/ Image
There were ~450,000 Jews in Europe during Snorri’s adult life, and they were subjected to the worst sort of harassment, abuse, and violence, largely due to the Christianity of the time. The lack of Jews in Scandinavia did not prevent Snorri from recapitulating antisemitism.

6/ Image
To put this into context: the Prose Edda was written a few years after the Church declared that all Jews had to wear clothing distinguishing them from Christians. During Snorri’s lifetime there were blood libel accusations & massacres in London, Oxford, Winchester, and York.

7/ Image
By the time Snorri died in 1241, there’d been anti-Jewish pogroms following the coronation of Richard Lionheart; crusading mobs had slain over 2,500 Jews in northern France; and Pope Gregory IX had put the Talmud on trial in Paris.

These are the waters Snorri swam in.

8/ Image
Also: did Snorri know about the antisemitic legends of William of Norwich (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_o…) and Robert of Bury (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_of…)? You betcha he did!

8a/ Image
Theologians, thinkers, historians, and poets of those decades all made use of the themes of the wicked Jew, thanks to the Gospels, popular accusations of Jewish perfidy, the associations made with “the Jew” in Christian writings about the Bible, & Christian supercessionism.

9/ Image
Now, Snorri didn’t put any Jews into the Prose Edda, but there are several figures in it who “make use of the potent typological armory of anti-Judaism.” Snorri didn’t engage in allegory (a common method) but did borrow from antisemitic artistic & theological traditions.

10/ Image
Snorri “was inspired by contemporary ideas about Jews and Judaism, and he then deployed these ideas, liberated from their original frame of reference, in the fantasy world of his Edda.”

#1) the death of Balder the Shining, purest of the gods, at the hands of Loki & Hǫðr.

11/ Image
During Snorri’s lifetime Balder was often associated with Jesus and described as having Christ-like attributes. Snorri doesn’t seem to have been a literal thinker, but there are some direct, one-to-one allegories present in Snorri’s version of Balder’s death. To wit:

12/ Image
a.Per the contemporary understanding, Jesus was killed by the Jews, who were manipulated by Satan. The Jews were portrayed as being blind—a recurring Norse & European trope of the time.

b.Per Snorri, Balder was killed by Hǫðr, a blind god who was manipulated by Loki.

13/ Image
c.Per contemporary understanding, everything acknowledged Christ’s divinity by their sorrow at his death—except for the Jews, who turned away and refused to acknowledge him.

d.All things wept when Balder died—except for the giantess þǫkk, who was Loki in disguise.

14/ Image
e.The Jews were infamous among Christians of Snorri’s time for not appreciating or being grateful for the “great gift” of Christianity.

f.The ironic meaning of Þǫkk’s name is “thanks” or “gratefulness.”

15/ Image
g. “The doctrine of the ‘Jew in Christian service’ permeated medieval thinking abt Jews.”
h. Loki is viewed by the other gods as being “in service” to them.

In both cases the servant is scorned & punished by their master, seen as antisocial & disloyal, & is an ethnic Other.
16/ Image
Moreover—oh yes, there’s more—Snorri describes how Loki, who is bound underground & tormented as punishment for causing the death of Balder, will break free during Ragnarok and lead the attack against the gods, accompanied by the “sons of Muspell” (the world of fire).

17/ Image
Funny thing. Starting in the 12th century, a widespread belief Europe was of “the Red Jews” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Jews). They were a nation of Jews imprisoned under a mountain in the Caucusus. In the build-up to the apocalypse, they will burst forth & attack Christendom.

18/ Image
Both the sons of Muspell & Red Jews attack on horseback. The Red Jews are cannibals, Loki’s son eats his brother. The escape of both is a precursor to the end of world. Only a Christian king can stop the Red Jews. The death of Balder robbed the Norse pantheon of that king.

19/ Image
Snorri never knew any Jews. But that’s never stopped antisemites from propagating antisemitism. It seems clear—to me, at least—that while Snorri didn’t have the Jews directly in mind when he wrote the Prose Edda, they nonetheless had real estate in his subconscious.

20/ Image
Trusting the Prose Edda too much for information about the Norse gods is a mistake. The Edda makes the Norse mythos linear (they were never meant to be). Snorri Christianized a bunch of pagan myths. And he injected some actively harmful imagery & associations into it.

So...is now a good time for a Twitter thread on the queerness at the heart of the Norse myths & belief system, or should I save it for another day?
Thread!, I guess, on, as I said, the queerness at the heart of the Norse myths & belief systems.

One doesn't think of the Vikings as the most gay-friendly of cultures. Certainly the various legal codes and cultural traditions punished queer folk for being queer.

....but.

1/
The position of gay Vikings (a term I'm using indiscriminately here) in Viking culture was a contradictory one. Gay sex was good, as long as it wasn't the bad kind of gay sex. Women were supposed to bear children and marry men, unless they preferred women to men.

Who wants to hear about a badass Viking woman from one of the sagas who had the best mic drop in all of the sagas?

1/
I give you Auðr Vésteinsdóttir (Auðr hereafter) from GISLA SAGA.

Auðr is strong-willed, loyal to her husband, and courageous beyond measure. So when her husband Gisli is outlawed and hunted by his enemies, she joins him, fighting with a club at his side when necessary.

2/
She could have kept her social standing & reputation & material comfort by divorcing him--Viking society would have understood and endorsed her for doing that--but she went on the run with him, leaving in a hut in a remote fjord with only her foster-daughter for support.

Good morning/afternoon/evening! We could all use some diversion today, I think, so let’s talk about a complicated real-life redemption story.

To wit: Billy Jenkins, the Jewish Nazi cowboy.

1/30
“Billy Jenkins” was the man’s stagename. The name he was born with in 1885 was “Erich Rudolf Otto Rosenthal;” his father, a German Jew, was a café owner & variety-show artist. (We don’t know much about his mother). I’ll be calling him “Jenkins,” as that was his chosen name.

2/
Jenkins grew up in Berlin and imbibed deeply of the German fixation with Buffalo Bill and all things Western. After college, in 1910 he left home (he hated his father) and traveled to the American West, where he spent several years learning tricks from every cowboy he met.

TIL:

- first Western detective stories translated & published in Japan in *1863*--that's pre-Meiji, even!

- first Chinese-written detective stories featuring Western-style detectives starred women as both detectives and criminals were published in 1907--author Lü Simian (!).
Quote: “This case is so complicated that even Sherlock Holmes would feel helpless if it fell into his hands. [Now] it is solved by a woman who returned from abroad for a brief
visit to her hometown. Who is to say that the wisdom of Chinese cannot compete with the Westerners?”
The lead female detective in these stories, Chu Yi, is a fan of Doyle's Holmes stories and asks herself "What would Sherlock Holmes do?" while crime-solving, but succeeds through her use of martial arts and more "Chinese" attributes--China, not the West, solves the crimes.

Okay, starting a thread now on family values on the American homefront during WW2. It goes some unhappy places, sorry, and got away from me a bit at the end, sorry again. But ugly truths are better than pretty lies, and pretty lies are what we're fed about the homefront.

0/
WW2: a time of great upheaval in the US. More than 15 million civilians moved to new counties over the course of the war. Wartime spending meant formerly poor people in suddenly available jobs were often flush with money. Psychological pressures due to the war were immense.

1/
So many civilians acted in ways that seemed entirely alien to how “real Americans” behaved. The result was a homefront whose strangeness seemed to match the strangeness that soldiers & sailors were experiencing at sea & in foreign countries. Everything became different.
