It's been a while since we've done this, so it's time to go back to the basics. I'm sure at this point most of us have heard about the need for a "Green New Deal". But what exactly is the GND? Here is a brief explainer ⬇️! Share this with anyone who needs some convincing
Most of us first heard about the #GND2030 when @AOC and @EdMarkey introduced the GND Resolution in 2019.
However, the Green Party came up with the original iteration of the Green New Deal in 2006 and the UN even urged the adoption of a global GND in 2009
So what is the GND? Broadly, it's a plan for massive government investment in green energy and climate infrastructure in order to decarbonize the country and create millions of new, high-paying jobs.
The goal is to save the planet by ending carbon-emissions in the US by 2030.
The #GND takes its inspiration from FDR's New Deal that revitalized the country after WWII and the Great Depression. Massive public spending programs created millions of new jobs after the war and developed some of the programs we know and love today!
We need that again.
So what are the policies included in the #GND?
✅ Massive public investment in Green Infrastructure and energy
✅ a Federal Jobs Guarantee (if you want a job, you can get one) that will create millions of new jobs within and outside green energy
But wait there's more
✅ Large-scale government mobilization to clean and protect our planet
✅ Community Resilience/Universal access to healthy food and nature
✅ Infrastructure Renewal and a massive expansion of public transportation
✅ a Just Transition away from fossil fuel
We need a #GND. Not just to save the planet but to begin the long process of rectifying centuries of systemic racism and violent capitalism through public investment
That is what we at @sunrisemvmt are all about: building power to defend the earth and our communities.
Ok that was a long one but promise we're done! If you want to learn more, check out this awesome video put out by @AOC about the GND!

THREAD: So...Newsom appointed @AlexPadilla4CA to be our next Senator.
We were part of a campaign pushing for a progressive appointment. Part of that campaign was sending prospective candidates questionnaires, and Padilla (well, a surrogate), filled his out
Here's what we got:
Padilla claims to support decisive climate policy such as #GND2030, banning fracking, ending development of the fossil fuel infrastructure, and direct emission regulation. Padilla views climate change as ‘an existential crisis’.
What did @AlexPadilla4CA say on voting rights? Priorities include: a constitutional amendment to overturn #CitizensUnited, reinstating the #VRA, banning photo ID laws as well as dramatically expanding early/vote by mail options.
