#MMT economists have been saying for decades that a #JobGuarantee is an automatic stabilizer. When the private sector is laying off millions of workers, the Federal government must step in as the employer of last resort.
You take people as they are, where they are, and you do on-the-job paid training at a living wage & benefits for anyone ready, willing, and able to work. During a #pandemic, one of the most important jobs under the #JobGuarantee system is to #StayHome.
There are also millions of jobs that can be done remotely and safely right now (e.g. emergency call centers, wellness checks, testing/tracing/isolating for #COVID19, weatherizing vacant buildings, installing rooftop solar on every school and gov building,..

Excellent piece in @ForeignAffairs by @jessejenkins etal #decarbonization. Succinct tech summary of progress toward 1.5C. But I respectfully disagree w/ subhead “Technology can save the planet.” Here’s some politics to add to their great analysis.… THREAD
Tech progress CAN create a virtuous cycle. See work by @thomasnhale, @HoffmannMatt, eg. But #climatechange is largely a problem of inequality. An emphasis on technology overlooks this fact. 1/n…
It glosses over the power of vested interests. I argue w/ @JeffDColgan and @thomasnhale that the existential politics of climate change mean that asset owners who face the loss of value of their assets will fight like hell to maintain that value. 2/n…

Our new study examines @AOC|@EdMarkey's GND resolution & @BernieSanders $16.3 trillion GND.

We address 2 questions:
(a) How can we pay for the #GND?
(b) In what ways do social welfare policies relate to tackling the climate crisis?

*Open access* (1/n)…
Ray Galvin (1st author) isn’t on twitter. So I’ll summarize:
✅Sanders #GND is economically sound
✅We can afford a Green New Deal
✅There is fiscal space
✅Social welfare programs needed for CO2 reduction

A 🧵 of how we came to these findings (1b/n)…
As Congress just approved a $2.2 trillion #covid19 aid package—largest in modern US history—the “how will you pay for it?” question swiftly faded. Our study clarifies common fallacies connected to federal spending—this has direct implications 4 future #GND legislation (1c/n)

Bernie is walking up on stage to make an introduction right now.
Bernie says he wants to say a few words.

Mentioned Jesse Jackson's history of struggle, his formation of the Rainbow Coalition, and Bernie says that 30 years ago, that kind of multi-racial, multi-ethnic coalition coming together was a Revolutionary idea.
Bernie then mentions Jesse Jackson running for President. Bernie says he supported Reverend Jesse Jackson back then in Vermont, and he won Vermont. And he also won the state of Michigan.

Bernie says Obama was able to be elected largely b/c of the barriers Jackson broke down.

Never mind what the insiders & powerbrokers tell you, if you’re SERIOUS about solving Michigan’s problems, @BernieSanders is THE ONLY real choice for
- union rights
- healthcare
- racial justice
- education
- Great Lakes protection
And SO many more...

A thread:

Nobody stands with unions like @BernieSanders. He opposed NAFTA, recognizing it would fundamentally destroy our manufacturing economy by giving corporations carte Blanche to exploit foreign labor.

He came to Detroit to picket w/ @UAW & helped put #Fightfor15 on the map.

Even after our “comeback,” economists estimate we lost 250K jobs during the recession that are NEVER coming back.

Why? Wall St played fast & loose w/ our economy.

@BernieSanders wants to hold them accountable so it never happens again.

"The Green New Deal" is going to take movement tactics. Bullshit. It's global - sitting in the wings. Your consent is being engineered. Spending billions to have you demand & "fight" for it. They play with you like a cat plays with a mouse before it decapitates it. For fun.
Who else is tasked with building the social license required to implement the Global Green New Deal?

Let's start with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, & May Boeve, Executive Director of 350-DOT-org.

Let me tell you what is absolutely apparent to me right now in this election cycle:

1. The #MMT community has a helluva lot of work to do because economic illiteracy is going to kill us all while we wait for light bulb moments for far too many so called Progressives
2. The #UBI vs #FJG fight was never understood, the impacts poorly circulated. Alternative media failed to bother to learn, presuming to know shit they were out of their depth to speak to. The MSM and establishment greedily advanced neoliberal policies and the masses are asleep
3. The word "socialism" is still weaponizable and is being trotted out by establishment @TheDemocrats to some effect. They are redbaiting & propagandizing all manner of evil and far too many will attempt to unify a neoliberal message which means we all die from #ClimateEmergency

Lots to like here, but, like much of her campaign's Medium-post policy making, this Warren plan is more sizzle than steak

I’m finding that quality of Warren’s plans quite vexing, as her supporters point to her PLANS above all

A (sorry long) #GND thread:

First, I’ve compared Sanders & Warren’s GND before, on the fed investments they were planning to put into combatting the climate crisis

It’s a bit out of date (back in Oct, she was proposing less $$ than John Delaney!), but here are those thoughts:

Some Warren folk are quick to dismiss Sander’s $16T plan as “Bernie’s 7 min abs” (dogsh!t line recycled from HRC) or just a ruse to "outflank" others

The size *is* important, but it’s not worth losing sight of what’s really at stake: investments DO stuff

The @sunrisemvmt and their transformative call for a #GreenNewDeal has given millions of people hope that we can stop the climate crisis and build a more just society.

As a strong supporter of their movement, here's why I think Sunrise members should endorse @BernieSanders:
@sunrisemvmt @BernieSanders On April 5, 2010, the Upper Big Branch coal mine, owned by Massey Energy, exploded in Raleigh County, WV, killing 29 coal miners.

At the time, I was 21 years old, living and organizing against mountaintop removal coal mining just a few miles away from the mine.
On April 5th, my friends and I watched from our front porch as the ambulances and Mine Rescue trucks rolled by for hours.

The analogy of a country’s budget being like a household's budget is often used as an argument for austerity measures (suspiciously, only used against social programs, not programs that benefit elites). But this analogy has several fallacies. Thread. 1/17
First, most deficit spending that invests in the general population, such as infrastructure, education, social uplift, environmental sustainability, etc. lead to economic growth (& if done right wage-led growth) that increases income & thus tax revenue. 2/17
This is supported by economic historians. Both in the US & internationally severe austerity measures have always lead to a death spiral of decreased economic activity, decreased employment, decreased wages & decreased tax revenue. 3/17

Yes. This is beyond grotesque. Klein references a Bolivian initiative under the Morales gov't - as a lure to promote the GND - without a single acknowledgment to the coup itself.

What Klein does not reference is far more compelling: the 2010 People's Agreement of Cochabamba.
The Cochabamba People's Agreement (April 2010) came out of the Bolivian World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth conference. It was Indigenous-led, with people attending from around the world. #Bolivia…
#Whiteness and racism played a key role at this conference.

350's (Klein serves on the board) sole purpose for attending the conference in Bolivia was to literally undermine the host country’s official policy position on climate change (300 ppm, 1ºC limit, etc.)

Making a list comparing ALL of Bernie's plans to Warren's plans to prove she isn't more "specific and detailed and has more plans" than Bernie.

"I have a plan" is empty sloganeering and libs need to admit it.
Bernie has 31 plans on his site, Warren has 52

But bear in mind Numerical count ≠ More 'specific' or 'policy-focused' — scope and quality of these plans matter

For e.g. Bernie's #GND (1 comprehensive plan) covered everything in Warren's 'Green' plans (6 separate plans)

So @NaomiAKlein made some important points on the @PitchforkEcon podcast about neoliberalism and the #GND. She said that while the popularity of purist neoliberal doctrine is not as popular pervasive, its success has been in convincingly asserting that #thereisnoalternative /1
This is because neoliberalism has effectively captured the public imagination in two critical ways. 1) Framing debates about Capitalism under the assumption that it is an immutable indivisible totality, while they themselves understand and act on the assumption it is not /2
Considerable energy is spent debating under the premise that the only contributions towards systemic alternatives must clearly guarantee the overcoming of the capitalist totality from the onset. Neoliberals however have spent 40 years shaping institutions to their liking /3

1/ Thoughts on @UNCTAD #TDR 2019, Financing a Global #GND.

THREAD for @IEJ_SA (page numbers of quoted sections in brackets, words in CAPS are headings.)
@UNCTAD @IEJ_SA 2/ Finance nerds amongst us will be pleased with the report. However, climate issues could feature more strongly throughout. Still, an excellent summary and useful political tool.

CC: @DanielaGabor @anninak82 @AnnPettifor @JWMason1 @BBonizzi @Powell_J_R @JasonPremo @cacrisalves
@UNCTAD @IEJ_SA @DanielaGabor @anninak82 @AnnPettifor @JWMason1 @BBonizzi @Powell_J_R @JasonPremo @cacrisalves 3/ Finance needed for a GND is immense. Rapid decarbonisation requires additional investment of 1-2% of GDP for decades (of course, costs much higher). The report = detailed discussion of what a developmentally orientated financial architecture looks like.

I'm at #ecomodernism2019, and there is a panel about Perspectives on the Green New Deal, with @leahstokes and @jerry_jtaylor and moderated by @emilyhholden

I'll be live tweeting in this thread
@leahstokes @jerry_jtaylor @emilyhholden Holden: we are here to talk about the role of the #GND and whether it is good politically
@leahstokes @jerry_jtaylor @emilyhholden Stokes: in my mind the #GND lives in the Democratic Presidential candidate plans. Inslee plan provided a good base and highlights the scale of the deployment challenge of 8 or more times the historical rate

Surprise!✨I am thrilled to announce the launch of our #GreenNewDeal art series with custom Bronx & Queens GND posters.

The Bronx edition poster will be given for free as a limited release to the public at our Pelham Bay Nature Day & Backpack Giveaway in the Bronx tomorrow.

These posters push us to imagine our future with a Green New Deal in two of our beloved NY-14 parks: Pelham Bay & Flushing Meadows.

All our #GND posters are made in the US, union-printed & will be available for purchase soon, but available at organizing events now.

Bronx & Queens art is where we’re starting, but we aspire to release custom #GreenNewDeal art for local communities across America.

We are also working on a line of GND reusables!

The first 250 prints will be released at Family Nature Day tomorrow, where we’re doing park tours:

People are deliberately starting fires in the #AmazonRainforest to illegally deforest indigenous land for cattle ranching

Pataxó woman:
“These assholes came in and burned down [our reservation]... I want all of the media here to see this”
For 2 years we’ve fought to preserve [our reservation] & these assholes came in & burned it down.

They are killing our rivers, our sources of life, & now they have set our reserve on fire. Tomorrow we are closing the roads & I want all the media here to see this.
🌎The #AmazonFires show there can be no #GreenNewDeal w/out indigenous rights

🌳By safeguarding sovereignty over ancestral lands-- which make up 1/4 of the earth's surface-- we can reverse deforestation

⚖️#GND is our best shot at stabilizing the climate & repairing injustice

This interview!
Apparently there's no one under 65 on Biden's team with any influence to tell him that 71% of Americans support #M4A among other things.
Exclusive: Biden expresses skepticism of Democrats' leftward tilt and AOC's mass appeal…
#Biden seems not to have even read the demographics from 2016 or the issues voters prioritized in 2018 (climate, healthcare, immigration, guns). He resorts to referring to AOC as "bright" but "not representative," which is how he famously referred to Obama in 2007.
#Biden also says he wasn't prepared for #KamalaHarris to come after him because she knows him & knew his late son, Beau. (He needs to stop using Beau for sympathy points. He should reference his living son, Hunter, who gave a heart-wrenching interview about his addiction.)
