Year 1989. PV Gangadharan is making a big canvas movie. So poetic and flawless the script, the lead actor suggests there shouldn’t be any song in it. Writer also agrees to that.
On multiple sittings, he convinces both writer and actor to add couple of songs without disturbing the pace, perfection, and poise of the plot. And he chooses the son of his Guru in movie making— to write them.
That person was very much there in Kozhikode itself, but — 2/n
totally busy with his official engagements.
Even after days and multiple reminders, he’s unable to write anything. One fine day (and what a fine day it literally would’ve been!), Gandadharan (being friends with him) tactfully brings our writer to this hotel (Alakapuri), and 3/n
locks him in a cottage — insisting to write a song — before being let go. (No, it all were done in a sweet, friendly way, no threats or coercions).
Our man came out in ten minutes flat. With the ‘Pallavi’ of a song.
Rest is history. 4/n
Film -- Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha.
Song — “Chandanalepa sugandham choodiyatharo....”
Lyricist — Shri. K. Jayakumar IAS.
(He was the then District Collector at Kozhikode). 5/n
Story is that on another day, the same thing happened again. Same hotel, same sweet lock-up, but resulting in another gem. That too, within minutes.
And every Malayalee kept on wondering ever after....”Kalarivilakku thelinjathaano...” 6/6
As another cursed season of bird flu and culling of ducks happen in Kuttanad, got reminded of this novel, and its cult-like cinematic adaptation in 1977.
Ducks — countless of them — marched throughout reels. At the end, someone poisons and kills them. Yes, in same Kuttanad. 1+
#IthaIvideVare was the first colour film directed by I V Sasi. Production was by Hari Pothen. Madhu, Jayabharathi, Vidhubala, Adoor Bhasi, Sharada, Bahadoor and all were the lead artists. Jayan played the cameo of a ferry-boat man.
Soman shot to superstardom with this film. 2+
Main shoot location was Alappuzha. Plenty of ducks were reportedly bought by the production house. It’s said they used these ducks for promotion of the film as well — by deliberately taking them to roads, allowing them to create small traffic blocks, and —> 3+
His 19th death anniversary today. Sankaradi has always been a minefield of talent -- who could flex acting muscles with literally anyone on screen and win. Here are three things you may didn't know about him.
(From an earlier talk by John Paul. Safari TV). 1+
1. He was an engineering college drop-out. He had to flee from Baroda where he was studying when he somehow got listed as a suspect in a bomb blast case. He landed up in Bombay and started as a small time journalist. 2+
2. He was a bachelor for most part of life. Upon insistence by family, he had a formal 'pennukaanal' in Cochin (near Vyttila) once. He was 50 then and the bride to be, 40. Somehow it didn't work out and life went on. Later, after 10 more years, when he wished to get married.. 3+
First Indian Car, Aravind Car, was built by a great visionary Late Mr. K. A. B. Menon, from Kerala in 1956. Here is a little history. The car is now in Kochi, Kerala. 2/N
‘Less than 10 years after independence, we needed little motivation to build things on our own. The term ‘of the people, for the people and by the people’ was more appropriate to us than anywhere else on the planet. In 1956’
Just a humble attempt to share some rare pics, news items, trivia, old film magazine clippings, film posters and notices etc on the best man we ever had—Jayan. These are from a good collection made over three decades or so by Mr. Rajan, a retired Railway official, now staying —>
—> in a place called Pallikkathodu in Kottayam. This collection is the result of his continuous efforts over the last three decades or so. Could take some quick pics from the vast items, and here I go...
Not following any particular pattern here. Just posting pics as they’re saved in phone.
